It's nice to see that this beautiful boutique property has been preserved and enhanced. I have always loved an intimate, informal place with friendly staff, which is also as I remember it from three decades ago. However, that renovation has got to be paid for and it has come at the expense of affordability.
When I stayed there a few times in the 1970s as a decidedly un-affluent young adult visiting my favorite city, it was Back Bay's best-kept secret. [There were even a few rooms with personal sink and shared hallway bath that offered the very best deal in Boston.] The signature restaurant, Cafe Budapest, had an upscale Hungarian theme and the coffee shop overlooking Huntington Avenue was convenient and inexpensive. While the elevators were dependable, I always enjoyed that elegant lobby staircase more.
