Cabbie drives 1,600 miles -- customer refuses to pay
Life as a cabbie is no walk in the park. They deal with drunk passengers, being robbed, and often spend part of their shift cleaning up puke in the backseat of their "office". The worst customers are probably those that take the cabbie for a ride. These thieves take advantage of taxi cab services, and run off without paying, when they reach their destination.
South Florida cab passenger Lucilo Perez (pictured here on the right) took things to the next level. Perez convinced cabbie Lelis Almeira to drive from Miami to Western Tennessee, without the means or intention of paying.
This is a 20 hour / 1,600 mile drive, and the cabbie had to pay for his own gas and food using his credit card.
When he arrived in Tennessee, the lady Perez was traveling to meet, said there was no way she'd pay for the cab. Apparently, Perez was under the impression that his lady friend would cough up the $3000 cab fare.
Memphis police arrested Perez, and he'll now need to find the cash to pay his cab driver. Meanwhile, the cab driver has lost all faith in humanity. Though I do feel sorry for him, the tough lesson here is to get a guarantee that you'll be paid - especially on a 1,600 mile journey.

idiot !

The idiot in this story is the man who assumed his lady would pay his $3000.00 fare. At least he was arrested. I can empathize with Lelis Almeira...I don't trust anyone either.

I drove cab for a few months while getting my health straightened out. When we had a fare that was too distant from our town, we had to ask for some money up front to ensure that we didn't get totally stiffed. One guy tried to stiff me and I said, "Okay, let's call the police and they can see what's in your container you're carrying". I got paid right away, but it's better to err on the side of caution.

I think the idiot may be the one who is saying it's 1600 miles from Miami to Western TN.
1050 miles to Memphis...1096 miles to Union City (The farthest Western Tip of TN). It's not even 1600 miles to Oklahoma City from Miami.
It doesn't change the fact that the passenger is a loser, but where has the journalistic integrity gone?
I guess 1600 miles has a nicer ring in the title....???
Jeff Dec 23rd 2009 11:13AM
Did you think about the fact that the cab driver had to drive BACK to his home city of Miami? That would easily total 1600 miles.
TRUDAT Dec 23rd 2009 11:52AM
Wow, Jeff. You may be as dumb as the cab driver that took this guy all the way to TN without getting a penny up front.
Since when did the passengers start paying for the driver's return trip home?
I bet right now you are kicking yourself for that last cab ride you took when you actually paid the driver for his return trip home...back to Jersey....from Detroit.
LOL!!
Babygirl Dec 23rd 2009 12:09PM
TRUEDAT.............you are the dumb one. Jeff was only referring to the fact that the return to Miami could possibly be part of the actual mileage that was calculated. He was not saying that the passenger should have been responsible for the return to Miami. Check yourself before you check someone else.
TRUDAT Dec 23rd 2009 12:56PM
That's a good point.......HOWEVER.....
.... if the return trip was calculated in, it would be 2200 miles and not 1600.
Still missing the mark by 600 miles.
My point, SUE, is that no one is held accountable anymore for what they write.
I was questioning the journalistic integrity of the author and AOL for publishing falsehoods.
G'DAY

1600 miles / 20 hours = 80 mph constant speed!
Claudine Dec 23rd 2009 5:55PM
He definitely should have gotten more than half of the fare upfront, or maybe he should have gotten the entire fare upfront, like buying a bus ticket.

Is it my imagination, or is our society getting worse and worse? There seems to be no end to the number of scumbags. They seem to be everywhere now.

something tells me he doesn't exactly have "papers", so flying would probably be out of the question.

this had happend to me kinda,I was home and a cab pulled in my house at about 2 am I have a sister who like to get her drink on so I assumed it was her.I waited for her to come in and she didnt so I went out to see if she was okay and the cab driver said some men went into my back yard because they said they lived here.So once he figured out their was no men in my house he went looking for 'em of course I couldnt sleep for the rest of the night not knowing if some creepy crack heads was going to come back and rob me.
I hate theives.

NO cab driver, should trust a situation like this! He should have at least gotten HALF of the money UP FRONT!! I would've told him, to find a different taxi cab, when he first got in the cab!! There's no way, I would've considered such a trip without KNOWING if I were going to get paid!! Live and learn!! I sure hope he LEARNED!!!
Gonzo Dec 23rd 2009 10:55AM
I've driven cab for almost 10 years. Payment in advance is the ONLY way to deal with this.
Gina Dec 23rd 2009 10:47AM
This happens on my street in my driveway all the time. The cab drivers ring my doorbell asking for the cab fare and I tell them I have been home all day with 2 cars in the driveway- duhh! I don't need a cab! So I tell them any calls to this address don't drive them here, I live here with my 18 yr old son who has a car and I do too.

Gina, take down your "7th Avenue Mission" sign and they will quit stopping there.
TRUDAT Dec 23rd 2009 11:11AM
MIAMI TO CHICAGO = 1300 MILES
MIAMI TO NEW YORK = 1300 MILES
MIAMI TO CANADA = 1300 MILES
1600 miles will get you all the way to Madison, WI from Miami.
Seriously! I'm just saying. How about an editor or some proof reading before the article is ran.
Wow!
sue Dec 23rd 2009 11:19AM
I live in the upper part of Ohio and I can get to Miami in less then 20 hours and it is only 1291 miles from my house.
