Your MTV comment rang true for me. As a man, I was privy to a lot of conversations you would probably not want to hear. Trying to convince a bunch of sex-starved guys in their twenties that things in the West really aren't the way they are on television proved to be a fruitless task!
Yes, women rule to roost in a lot of Middle Eastern contexts. I met a fair number of women in the Middle East, especially Egypt, Syria, and Iran. Generally they would approach me with their husbands or in large groups so as not to be "unseemly". Subservient they are not. As far as social equality, though, they have a long way to go. There's a growing Islamic feminist movement that shows a lot of promise.
Where did you go in Iran? Tell us more! I have a feeling you had a very different trip than I did.
