Low flying Ryanair jet blows roof tiles off roof - puts 82 year old in hospital
For once, Ryanair is in the news because of something unrelated to oddball fees or something silly their CEO said. Residents of the German village of Groß Grönau have pulled together to sue the Irish airline because they put an 82 year old woman in the hospital.
Apparently, a Ryanair jet flew so low over her house, that it actually blew roofing tiles off the roof, putting the poor woman into a shock. One villager told the local paper that she actually had to duck when the plane came in for its landing at the local Lübeck-Blankensee airport.
A group of 500 anti-noise-pollution protesters accused the airline of negligent bodily harm and willful property damage. Of course, as is often the case with airlines, Ryanair is rejecting any responsibility for the incident.

.CW, has the best point here! I myself live near an airport and I put up with this "noise" some of you complain about. I hope the woman is okay, but I HIGHLY doubt RyanAir should be held liable. Why? I really don't think they said, "Oh that house is ugly. Let's tear it up!" Um no...lol. If they did it on purpose, then yes they should pay. But living near an airport comes with the territory. YOU are aware an airport is near, YOU are aware of the noise, YOU are (depending on how far you live from it) of how loud it can get. So why should THEY pay your YOUR choice? Airport I live near has been around for years. And usually they build then with a "cushion" around them away from housing, etc.... to prevent this. What's to say that Denver Intl, built miles outside of Denver, CO won't have it's own homes around it in say 10-15 years??
My airport years ago added another runway. Course they did the meetings and polls and stuff to approve it cause a highway had to be moved to accommodate the new strip. So they towns people nearby were acceptable of it when after all the "stuff" it was given the green light. Now with the traffic, they complain it's too loud. HELLO!!!
Though not many of have had things like what happened to (racendirt) which is unfortunate, accidents ARE going to happen. Whether it be, plane, car, train, truck, or even at home.

Does this surprise anyone? When do folks step up and take ownership???????????? NOT TOO OFTEN. You have to pry and drain your assets to get what you are entitled to. But not surprising, thats why the world is what it is sadly.

A little science fact check. All aircraft produce wake turbulence with wingtip and exhaust trailing vortices similar to a sideways tornado.
"...Turbulence generated within the vortices, if encountered at close range, can damage aircraft components and equipment and cause personal injuries... Peak vortex tangential speeds up to almost 300 feet per second have been recorded. The greatest vortex strength occurs when the generating aircraft is heavy-clean-slow... Flight tests have shown that the vortices from larger (transport category) aircraft sink at a rate of several hundred feet per minute...The wake of larger aircraft requires the respect of all pilots." from http://avstop.com/stories/aircraftwaketurbulence.htm
The roof damage from large, low flying aircraft is entirely plausible.

I dont understand why people blame the pilots all the time for something that happens in aviation. Yes they have control over the plane and any wrong move can be their last and every passenger. But Air traffic controllers are the ones who give the pilots the assigned altitude and heading. What, do people honestly think pilots make their own route and can fly anywhere they want? That is a big no, air traffic controllers are the ones who should be blamed. why do you think they have the most stressful job its not easy telling planes where to go. When you got over 50 planes floating in your airspace waiting to land.

Would anti-aircraft guns help?

Low flying military jets are simply the sound of freedom. Enjoy it. :)

Why do those stupid pilots have to fly so LOW just before landing? Beats me

Just a point... People buy a home near an airport, and complain about noise from the planes. People buy a home near a railroad, and complain about noise from the trains. People buy a home near an interstate, and complain about noise from the cars. People buy a home near the ocean, and complain about the water getting too close to their homes...

People just like to complain thesedays - everyone's a victim.
