I recently spent a few days in the Mekong river. It is fascinating, but tourism in SE Asia is everywhere and i believe that going with a few more days to spare around the villages is very compensating. Even the traditional tours arranged through some agencies can be very good and an interesting way to see how vital are the waterways in any country.
