Regional airport renamed to honor Jimmy Carter
Unless you fly a crop duster or private plane, chances are you'll never have anything to do with Souther Field in Americus, GA. However, despite its small size, this airport is in the news after the local city council decided to rename it after Jimmy Carter. This measure has annoyed some citizens groups, as the original name for the airport was not without its own history.
Souther Field was named after Henry Souther, who helped develop the airfield, and the landing strip was where Charles Lindbergh made his first ever solo flight.
The newly named Jimmy Carter regional airport is 20 miles from Plains, the hometown of the former President.
This small regional airport does not have an officially recognized IATA airport code, so don't bother trying to find it on your favorite airline booking site.

Well, Scott, there was no lease on the Panama Canal. The U.S. & Panama signed a treaty in 1903, after buying France's interest in the land for $40 million. The U.S. agreed to pay $10 million and an annuity for the Canal Zone. This treaty granted the U.S. perpetual jurisdiction over the Canal Zone which was 5 miles wide.
The sole purpose for the Canal was military, although trade shipping also went through the Canal. There was a toll placed on every ship that locked through. In 1951, by an act of Congress, a company was established called The Panama Canal Company to collect the tolls and perform the upkeep and, generally, to operate the Canal
After WW2, the Canal was used less & less by the U.S. Navy since most of the ships and all of the aircraft carriers were too large to go thru the Canal. THIS, I assume was why Mr.Carter was coached into "giving" the Canal away. It had become too costly for the U.S. to operate for a civilian venture.
But, YES, it was GIVEN to the Panamanians lock, stock, and barrel after people of this country paid for it in money & blood.

Rodger, Kennedy escalated VietNam, but Eisenhower actually sent the first advisors and the Force Recon guys in. You are correct about Johnson.....a lower individual didn't walk the face of the earth.....until recently.
Our financial woes started much earlier than Mr. Carter, though. Mr. Kennedy spent a butt load on the "space race" among other things.
This country is on a dead-end road. Just as your bank loan officer has told you, you cannot spend your way out of debt!! Seems as though the last eleven presidents haven't figured that out.

Scott -- I was also driving at the same time I returned to the United States for discharge from the Army in September 1975 and the lines were not there. They started in 1976 / 1977 and Carter de-regulated the oil companies and started the sub prime debacle. As for your assertion that President Bush started the economic downturn I suggest you throw away your ACORN instruction and history mauals and go back to the Senate when RepubliCANs introduced a bill twice to stop the sub prime lending. Diane Waters, Barney Franks and Chris Dodd ripped them apart and darmed near gave the crooks in Fannie and Freddie medals. these were televised hearings so you can research it. Prior to that Clinton had pushed hard for the sub prime and threats were lobbied against banks in favor of it. I was working for a major California bank when the city redevelopement folks came in with their supporter and told us "the peoples bank is a black owned bank and can not take all of these loans so we need you to step in and sign up. Remember, you have some requests to add on to your building and it could or could not be approved". Now if that isn't strong arm tactics, what would you call it. Slick Willie started to back down when he saw the damage that was being caused but the "special ones, Obama included" wouldn't back off. So you may think Carter was good and in one respect he was....Good for nothing. He caused unemployment to rise, interest rates to go sky high, taxes to go sky high, de-regulated oil companies and started sub prime. Not accomplishments I would want to be known for.
