Travelocity survey says: fat, smelly and coughing the worst to be sitting next to

The results are from the Travelocity 2009 "rudeness poll", asking people a variety of questions. In total, the survey interviewed just under 1600 people, from the US and Canada. When the survey expanded on "large passengers", 44% said the airlines should provide a second seat for free, while 39% said fat passengers should pay for their own space.
When asked about hotel items taken from the property, people either lied, or are just more honest than I expected - 13% of people never take anything from their room, and just 1% admitted to stealing dishes and silverware.
The survey is very well put together, and a lot of work was put into explaining the results. If you'd like to read more about rude passengers, check out the full version of the 2009 Travelocity Rudeness Poll (PDF file).

This survey is very accurate and not only for the sake of traveling. I have first hand experience at work sitting next to an individual (whom is Eddie Murphy's cousin) who i can describe as fat, smelly and coughing among other things. There are times where i ponder if she harbors the Swine Flu.

Let me preface this by saying that I am a large woman.
The VAST majority of us larger people are this way because our actions, yes. I say ACTIONS, not CHOICE. There is a difference.
There is no excuse for being stinky, rude, or obnoxious. Those are completely avoidable, by anyone.
To the countless gracious people who were kind enough about having to sit next to me, thank you for being nice about it, even if was only for appearances' sake. It's just as uncomfortable for me to know that someone sitting next to me may be cringing inwardly for the duration of the flight. And to the flight attendants who handed me a seatbelt extender with a smile (and without my having to ask), thank you also. I do appreciate it.
To the few jerks who made their opinion clear- well I can understand your feelings, but you didn't have to be so mean about it. I may be big, but I am reasonably nice looking, dressed well, CLEAN, and friendly.
