Banff Mountain Photography Competition winners announced

For outdoor enthusiasts and adventure travelers, the Banff Mountain Photo Competition is an annual photography competition that never fails to provide amazing images that are both breathtaking and awe inspiring at the same time. This past week, the 2009 winners were announced, and true to the legacy of the competition, they are spectacular.

This year's judges included experienced outdoor and adventure photographers Alec Pytlowany, Andrew Querner, and Kristy Davison. The jury certainly had their work cut out for them as they had to review more than 4000 images submitted by 600 photographers, from 41 countries. If the winners are any indication, this couldn't have been an easy task.

Check out the each of the winning photos, broken down into a variety of categories by clicking here. While examining the gallery, you can click on any of the photos and learn more about the photographer, where he or she shot the image, and other details on the story behind it, some of which are very interesting. The gallery also contains a number of "special mentions" which are outstanding photos in their own right, but just didn't win one of the categories.

As an aspiring photographer myself, I can't help but be a little envious of these amazing shots. They certainly remind me that I have a lot more to learn.
