United to try checked luggage buffet
Do you always travel with two bags to check? Some people don't travel light, and they know that, in this new world of airline fees, they're going to have to stomach an extra charge as a result. Under a new United Airlines plan, you'll be able to "subscribe" to extra bag privileges. Instead of paying $20 for the first bag checked and $30 for the next one, you can shell out $249, buffet-style, and enjoy a full year of checking two bags.
This works for both domestic and international flights. The program pays for itself after a mere five trips. So, if you're a road warrior or just like your vacation time, this could be a smart program for you.
But, don't get too comfy: United is calling this an "introductory price." If the program works well, expect your breakeven point to creep a bit higher next year.

Biggest problem with this program is most eliete passangers already check bags for free because of their status. Casual travlers wouldn't see a return on investment and part time road warriers pack it all in carry on's for convinence any way. I just don't see who their market is for this.

I used Advantage Baggage Service, too. It was easy. I just filled out their Quote request with my home address and date of pick up and my hotel address and date of arrival on their website and they e-mailed me back with the estimated cost. It was nice to travel without the hassle of dragging your baggage to the airport, check in your bag and pay that high baggage fee, go through security, find your seat on the plane, wait to get off the plane and only to find out that they lost my bags and now I have to stand in another long line at their baggage claim office. Screw that!
