British Airways offers free companion fare

Fly on British Airways between now and January 29, 2010 and you could earn a free companion fare for your next flight.

To get the free ticket, you need to sign up for the Executive Club (which is free) and take a round-trip flight to any one of the 300 destinations to which the airline flies. Then, book another ticket January 4 to July 30, 2010 for travel January 11 to December 15, 2010. You'll pay full price for your ticket but just taxes and fees for a friend.

Don't count on sitting next to your companion though, at least, not unless you're willing to pay up. British Airways now charges passengers $30 to $90 to choose their seats 24 hours before departure. After that, they get free pick of what's left, which means they may not be able to sit with their traveling companions.

The airline has also reduced baggage allowances and instituted more fees. The charge for the first additional bag is $50 to European and UK destinations and $60 for other international locations. At those prices, the companion fare isn't exactly "free".

i am traveling to arusha in tanzania jully 3, 2010 with 3 others, from okc,ok, one will be coming from jax , fla, and returning to various places in usa, to join a tauck tour on july4-17th. i of course am interested in budget air fares, perhaps this ba deal would help, altho i assume one tix of each fare is full fare coach, and the discount tix does not give ff miles, so , perhaps no bargain?? if you can help email me.

This one has to take the cake! The Federal Aviation Administration has to step in SOON before travelers are nickled and dimed to death. Some of the inacted measures seem reasonable, but for budget-conscious travelers (which in today's economy is most of us); the very least we can expect on a 10 hour flight is to sit next to our spouse, significant other, ELDERLY PARENT, friend without having to pay an additional fee. Personally I want to see ALL the airlines invoke a surcharge for overweight passangers, which is no different than that for overweight luggage. The theory behind it is the same. When checking in, one would simply have his or hers BMI checked and for each point over a reasonably decided figure, the fee would increase EXPONENTIALLY. Come on AIRLINES - let's see you attack that SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
