Family Guy cartoon banned in Venezuela
I think we'd all agree that there are some bad TV re-runs out there that deserve to be taken off the air. But I'm not sure that Family Guy is one of them. Venezuelan authorities have banned the cartoon from future broadcast. Any TV station that doesn't drop the show will be fined.
What prompted this reaction? The recent episode in which Brian, the talking dog, started a campaign to legalize marijuana.
Watch out future cartoons, so you don't offend the Venezuelan government! It has happened before, and it will surely happen again. The Simpsons was banned there last year because of its "messages that go against the whole education of boys, girl, and adolescents."
Televen was one station threatened with a fine for showing The Simpsons in the morning hours. What did they do to avoid the fine? They were forced to show public service films as an apology. And they replaced The Simpsons with Baywatch.
Really, now. Baywatch is better?
It seems as though the government and TV in Venezuela are closely linked. President Hugo Chavez hosts his own talk show. And if new regulations go into effect, cable stations would be forced to broadcast all of Chavez's speeches.

It seems as though certain people are blowing this issue out of proportion. First off, Im not a huge fan of family guy as i was during the beginning, but i still watch it because its a big hit and I find it funny as well. sure its stupid funny, but that's the whole concept of it. it does have its controversial moments, but hey, news flash, so does almost every other show we sink our eyes onto lol. I feel bad for those in Venezuela. To have to watch a speech about the prez. If he wants to have them watch him all day, they might as well be saying, put television in the dumpster. of course thats just my view. Remember the true nature of these problems: Government and politics. :)

I agree with Venezuela's decision to ban this show. Family Guy is a pretty nasty show...I can't even get past the commercials for it. (but who would want to?)

Dear Freedom lovers,
The original article fails to mention Venezuela is only one of several countries to ban this style of show. I lived in Ecuador when it banned the Simpsons. Not everyone has our sense of values, some countries actually value that their children be respectful to adults...I do not see that as a bad thing.
The rooms' comments about "you must be a southerner, Jesus-freak, or a prude show your total lack of education about the powerful influence tv has had/can have on the watchers, especially youth. I'll be the first to admit I have watched Family guy/Siumpsons, but humor doesn't make prejudice right and in time humor confirms people in their racism/prejudices. Some peoplein this world see there are deeper values worth more than absolute freedom to offend every living creature, like protecting traditional values. Freedom is not even absolute even in our country (.ie nudity, violence, and cursing) but if you like that our youth are getting more violent and disrepectful, stayed tuned to your boob tube. and no I am not so simple-mined to think that TV is the sole culprit, but it is a part and if your are protecting values where families/societies protect their children from learning to be disrespectful to their parents/adults/authority under the guise of humor, then you will understand why other countries (even misguided maniacs like Chavez) have made a profound start of a healthier world. I've taught youth for 10 years in the US and abroad and see the exponential growing lack of respect they have for others and I know it comes from many places, one of which has been tv, and for that reason, I get why others want to limit shows that deeply offend and can give up a couple of cheap laughs in hopes of a better world.

Malisa, You ARE aware that the Nazis liked to ban stuff "To protect their people". Right? So, while we're at it, why don't we burn a few books and spoil EVERYBODY'S fun?

Paul,
you clearly demonstrate was has been and continues to be missing from today's generation of Parenting (even though you are their uncle). Now we need more Parents to do the same. You are correct concerning Marisa's comments. they do feed this governments need to control everything. And I do believe that my father faught to preserve all our freedoms as well as I did recently in the middle east. To allow myself and others who truly cherish the freedoms given us, to watch what other call crap or simply change the channel to more crap.

Wow! If you think that TV today is no worse than it was 20 years ago then you have some serious mental issues. Normally I would be hesitant to say that to someone but you do not seem to shrink from personally attacking me. I had made a general comment about the story and I welcome rebuttel but, sir, you are part of what is wrong with the world today. You cannot merely debate issues and make any comentary personal somehow labeling your opponents as "evil" because they happen to disagree with you. As for me, I simply say you are a nut. Have a nice day!

Nope your the nut Corey and I'm right TV is no worse than what it was 10 or 20 years ago and I don't have serious mental issues as you have claim I am right. And your a prude and loser that needs to get a life Corey and that isn't a personally attacking you as you have claim which is a lie.

What happened with the Simpsons was that the government asked a TV station not to show it during hours that children may be watching. So the station announced that they were forbidden by law to show the Simpsons as a way to score points against Chávez, then when the hubbub had died down they merely moved it into a different timeslot as they had always planned to.
A similar thing seems to be happening here. There's really no reliable evidence that Family Guy is going to be banned. From reading the original sources of this, it's clear that El Aissami was criticizing the United States for labeling Venezuela as a "drug state" (which has been done repeatedly in the past) while its cultural products promote the use of drugs. You can all retire from your moral outrage against dictatorial socialism now. :)

Ok, whatever that tirade was speaks for itself. LOL I am through having a "battle of the minds" with an obviously unarmed opponent. Have a nice life in your little dream world dude.
