Family Guy cartoon banned in Venezuela
I think we'd all agree that there are some bad TV re-runs out there that deserve to be taken off the air. But I'm not sure that Family Guy is one of them. Venezuelan authorities have banned the cartoon from future broadcast. Any TV station that doesn't drop the show will be fined.
What prompted this reaction? The recent episode in which Brian, the talking dog, started a campaign to legalize marijuana.
Watch out future cartoons, so you don't offend the Venezuelan government! It has happened before, and it will surely happen again. The Simpsons was banned there last year because of its "messages that go against the whole education of boys, girl, and adolescents."
Televen was one station threatened with a fine for showing The Simpsons in the morning hours. What did they do to avoid the fine? They were forced to show public service films as an apology. And they replaced The Simpsons with Baywatch.
Really, now. Baywatch is better?
It seems as though the government and TV in Venezuela are closely linked. President Hugo Chavez hosts his own talk show. And if new regulations go into effect, cable stations would be forced to broadcast all of Chavez's speeches.

Paul, you aren't being forbidden to watch family guy. If you had read the story you would see that it's Venezuela that is banning Family Guy. And it's not like the U.S. has never banned TV shows, movies, books, etc. As long as there is government there will be control and censorship. It's not just foreign countries, it's happening here as well. The government controls the media, and all the sheep listen to every piece of crap spewed from the mouths of these reporters of false information. Eliminate the government, and you eliminate the problem.

Family Guy is a cartoon. It's entertainment that most people find funny. It's not meant to teach morals. That's the job of the parents. If you want your children to have morals, then teach them how to be a good person. Don't let them watch shows they shouldn't be watching in the first place.
As for banning the show, we live in a free country. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Don't say it should be banned which would deprive me and other people with a sense of humor of the funniest show on TV. People are over-sensitive and take things too seriously today. Lighten up.

oh i understand you fully, but people like marisa and many others only feed the governments ability to control, did the ban on alcohol do anything? no it just gave a bunch of low lives a chance to strike it rich, and yes it is to some extent censorship that shouldnt be there in the first place, and of course people are stupid and ignorant enough to believe the jibberish and crap they feed us every stinkin day, but if my grandpa and ancestors faught for this country to keep it the way it is then it should stay that way, just like it has worked for the past couple of centuries

I am not a religious person. I do not hail from the South. I don't do drugs or drink. I have no problem with others watching this cartoon. I just think it is in poor taste and does not deserve to be on the air at all. Supposedly, this show was and is intended to poke fun at the morals of our society. I have no objection to tat. However, all to often this show steps way over the line. However, to have a government step in and ban the show is pure censorship. As an individual, I have the tight to choose to watch if I decide to. I also have the right as an individual to censor any show I watch. I can change channels or just shut the TV off. Venezuela should give it's people the same choice.

Amendment 1: Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression, Ratified December 15, 1791:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
The censorship that some of you hope for violates this law. Here's a better idea, block the show on your TV or change the channel. How about getting rid of the TV altogether and doing something with your brains? The same law that protects Family Guy also protects your religious views.
I suggest you study your constitution better people. No where does it say "You have the right not to be offended."

I can not stand any of those type shows. They are all STUPID, DUMB and WORTHLESS GARBAGE! Why anyone would watch them, I don't know. Not me. But that's just how I feel about them.

I think the show is stupid too. It had it's funny moments, but overall Family Guy steps way over the line on multiple occasions. Still, it's purpose is to entertain, not inform. It really doesn't matter why people watch them, it's their business.

Sooooo......they don't ban the show because of its many sexual inuendos but because of its silly and stupid jokes to legalize weed? Did I miss something? I'm not one for those silly cartoon shows that claim to be for adults but maybe Venezuela is on to something even though I would have thought that banning it for the many ridiculous sexual jokes would have been a number one reason. Maybe the US should pay attention. I honestly wouldn't mind if the show had all of these things without cartoon figures, but since it does, I just feel that its sending the wrong message. We allow our kids to watch cartoons, but not porn. THEN we turn right around and put a cartoon like this on which is basically everything leading up to porn if not that.

I think its the funniest show on TV. I never miss it and have watched many of the shows several times as they show re-runs. Anyone that is not particularly intelligent may not really get the show. Its a different type of humour, and its the best. If you are a prude, you probably don't get a talking dog that is still afraid of a vacuum cleaner, and a 1 year old that wants to take over the world. Its an incredible show. If you have not watch, please do. It will take your troubles away, and I would certainly rather have my kid watching that show than being out on the streets after dark. Its the best.

My kids are ages 10 and 13 and I don't let them watch any TV. Simple.
