Photo of the Day (9-16-09)
This photo of Annie Weaver Norton's sink is a reminder that objects can evoke images of the people who no longer use them, as well as, provide visual interest and a slice of history. The white tones and shapes of this shot reminds me of a Louise Nevelson sculpture. Norton, also an American female artist, lived and worked in West Palm Beach, Florida where Willy Volk snapped this shot when he recently visited the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens.
At this sink, Norton felt water on her hands as she washed off tools, or perhaps rinsed off an apple--or waited for the phone to ring. This cast iron sink is exactly the kind that was in my grandparents' basement when I was a child. It was there when they moved into their house in the 1930s.
