China covers suicide bridge in "butter," safety margarinally improved
Does anyone know when April Fool's Day is celebrated in China? Because if this article isn't a result of some media hoax, then I've got a lot of unanswered questions...According to China Daily & the UK's Metro Newspaper, Government officials in Guangzhou have ordered a 1,000ft long steel bridge to be covered in greasy fat, to prevent people from climbing on the structure. The bridge has a history of attracting jumpers that often attempt to gain media coverage or draw attention to personal problems.
Government spokesman Shiu Liang said that they've tried employing guards at both ends of the bridge, and went as far as installing special fences with notices asking people not to commit suicide. And every new attempt, successful or not, means several hours of backed up traffic and a wave of complaints from local residents.
The butter however, has seen positive results. Bridge guard Wong Man stated, "Since we put up the butter there have been no problems with these attention seekers."
No word yet on if Nintendo intends to sue for breach of intellectual property.
So, travelers, bridge climbers, and citizens of China - please be careful out there. And if anyone knows if this is actually true, please drop us a line.

Nice pun in the title there. You could've went with "I can't believe it's suicide bridge" or "China to butter up its suicidal Park-Waaayyyyy". Just my 2 cents :)

"attention seekers" Please! These people are depressed and sick and need help most of the time.

Suicide is a different deal to the average chinaman than it is to an american.

Some people say that people attempt suicide to seek attention; that their depression is not real. I say, "I Can't Believe It's Not Real Depression!"

Anyone else from the Eastern SHore of MD? There is a Suicide Bridge in Dorchester County, although for the life of me I cannot figure out how anyone used this bridge--about five feet from the water--to harm him/herself. Maybe the victims just overate at the great seafood restaurant nearby...

I lived in MD for 21 years, I just moved to VA last summer and I have never heard of any suicide bridge although I did live in viewing distance of the key bridge in which a guy threw his young son off of it in I think 2007

Ha-ha. Margarin-ally improved. Maybe it will stop the "spread" of unhealthy suicides.

actually a lot of these people are just attention seekers who never end up 'doing the deed'. They just want to be on tv. They have to close the bridge, traffic backs up, it's a red tape mess...and the idiot just wanted to tell his wife he loves her on the television. It's stupid, and they've been having a big problem with this. In fact, I read an article not too long ago about some guy who was toying with everyone on the same bridge, traffic had been closed for hours and hours...someone was sick of it and pushed him. That's the kind of stuff they want to avoid.

I know the local government wanted to find a way to stop the number of suicide attempts on that bridge... but this... I will have to have a look.
