This is too funny, I was literally there last week doing much the same. I took my Canon 40D and 17-55mm f2.8 and had some great results. Not sure what lens you where using, thanks for posting your photos!

Yeah I'm going back in a few weekends too. Using a Canon digital Rebel with 10-20mm f4-5.6. A great lens and still quasi portable.
Any hotel recommendations?
