You only look crazy in the eyes of those who have never lost any data. I keep two copies, partly due to resources/packing light and partly because at some point your maintenance rituals start cutting into your vacation time. (I only have the luxury of traveling once a year so I try to make the most of it.)
I use a dedicated device (Hyperdrive Colorspace) and keep the photos on the SD cards, keeping the drive in my bag and the cards in my wife's. I don't have (or wish to lug) a netbook or laptop. Perhaps I'd trade my Colorspace for a tiny netbook if the netbook had enough hard drive space.
My dream device: a simple adapter that copies from an SD card to a portable USB drive (which are much slimmer than my Colorspace and the Epson you pointed out). I've seen these online from no-name manufacturers but reviews suggest they're slow and unreliable and there's no way to tell that the copy was successful, plus they guzzle bulky AA batteries.
