My wife sometimes uses the observatory at Manua Kea and has visited this park a few times. Sometimes when the volcanoes are active you can actually walk on recently cooled lava. You have to be careful the soles of your shoes don't melt! In other parts of the park the lava is still flowing. It's best to avoid those bits no matter how good your shoes are. :-)
