IMHO, if you must do old fashioned driving gloves, the best material is either deer or goat hide. It conforms to your hand for a custom fit over time.
However, something to keep in mind is that open back gloves are not allowed by most track/club organizations as safety wear.
For the ultimate in steering wheel grip, consider gloves made from suede or the suede alternative known as alcantara. The fuzzy texture provides the most secure grip for the widest variety of steering wheel materials under the greatest temperature variations. They come in many styles and colours. Many with various levels or padding and/or wicking properties to keep your hands comfortable no matter what. Visit a race car supply store and try some on.
