Hawaii says "stay away" to the Wienermobile
Apple pie, Baseball and the Wienermobile - seriously, there is not much more American than the iconic Oscar Mayer hotdog on wheels. People everywhere love seeing the Wienermobile, and contests are held yearly so people can get a chance to drive it themselves.
Unless of course you live in Hawaii. An archaic 1927 law bans all billboards on the Hawaiian islands, and a local organization claims the Wienermobile should be part of that ban. The group, Outdoor Circle, is pushing to keep the hotdog off the island forever.
The Wienermobile visited Hawaii for 3 weeks in July, and as far as Outdoor Circle is concerned, that is going to be its last visit.
According to the people behind the organization, "6 to 12 O'ahu residents complained". A 2006 law banning all vehicles with the sole purpose of advertising was also cited in the complaint.
The Honolulu mayor welcomed the Wienermobile to his city, and it was honored with an official "Oscar Mayer Wiener Day". The mayor is now looking into possible violations, but pointed out that no official complaints were received by them.
Sometimes you just wonder whether people are having such a hard time finding better things to do. Complaining about the Wienermobile violating a 1920's law just seems like a huge waste of time.

Can't wait unitl the decide that wearing a t-shirt with a company name, car brand, or whatever is a "billboard" because it advertises, then we can all go shirtless - wait until you see the complaints from that..
By the way, the definition of a billboard is "a flat surface or board, usually outdoors, on which large advertisements or notices are posted." or if you don't like that definition, here's another from Webster's Dictionary ": a flat surface (as of a panel, wall, or fence) on which bills are posted ; specifically : a large panel designed to carry outdoor advertising"
A special message to the 6-12 that complained Get A Life!!!

Have you seen the shuttle buses and trollies in Hawaii. They have more advertising on them than the weiner mobile. Let them eat Spam then.

I used to stop in Hawaii in the 80's on my way to Guam. This place is disgusting just a bunch of pig eating islander trash living off the tourists. If you think I'm kidding watch Dog the Bounty Hunter and you'll get the the real picture of Paradise (Parasites)
Joe Smith Jul 24th 2009 8:05PM

Well it's very apparent to me that these people must live very drab and dull lives if this is all they have to do with their time. They might want to spend some time questioning the very bad agendas of Obama or something else

Let's just be grateful 2,000+ miles of ocean separates us from those mental giants on the mainland!

People who complain about something THIS petty ARE weenies. They should be the first settlers sent to Mars when it happens. God spare me from whiners and "concerned citizens".

I saw a story last night that Hawaii's medical system doesn't have enough money to cover its health care promises. I'm sure a kid with a serious illness thinks this is a better way for a politician to earn his pay. After all, they all work for YOU!
Ray Jul 24th 2009 9:43PM
Don't these Hawaii jackasses have something better to do?
Zach Jul 24th 2009 10:14PM
Your "archaic law" sounds like a great idea to me. No point in sullying paradise with ads for check-cashing joints.
Dean Jul 24th 2009 10:49PM
If this is all they have to worry about in Hawaii they are very lucky.

I live in Hawaii, and the group that protestd the Weinermobile are a bunch of Old Busybodies with nothing to do with their retired lives. We loved the Weiner, and were all very upset to see it go. SO one bunch of old rich people get to make the decision for it to go. SOund familiar??
