Hawaii says "stay away" to the Wienermobile
Apple pie, Baseball and the Wienermobile - seriously, there is not much more American than the iconic Oscar Mayer hotdog on wheels. People everywhere love seeing the Wienermobile, and contests are held yearly so people can get a chance to drive it themselves.
Unless of course you live in Hawaii. An archaic 1927 law bans all billboards on the Hawaiian islands, and a local organization claims the Wienermobile should be part of that ban. The group, Outdoor Circle, is pushing to keep the hotdog off the island forever.
The Wienermobile visited Hawaii for 3 weeks in July, and as far as Outdoor Circle is concerned, that is going to be its last visit.
According to the people behind the organization, "6 to 12 O'ahu residents complained". A 2006 law banning all vehicles with the sole purpose of advertising was also cited in the complaint.
The Honolulu mayor welcomed the Wienermobile to his city, and it was honored with an official "Oscar Mayer Wiener Day". The mayor is now looking into possible violations, but pointed out that no official complaints were received by them.
Sometimes you just wonder whether people are having such a hard time finding better things to do. Complaining about the Wienermobile violating a 1920's law just seems like a huge waste of time.

Sooooo.....none of Hawaii's cars has little liscence plate holders with the name of the Dealership on it, or a car emblem indicating which "brand" and model of car it is? Ahhhhh......I thought so.
What kind of wishy washy macadamia NUTS are those absolute anti capitalistic purists anyway?

Come on, you guys. These people are just enforcing the rules. If they don't, there's always the possibility that someone somewhere might have fun...

I have issues with this article. First of all, I have lived in Hawaii my entire life. Yes, no billboards are allowed here which is just the way we like it. This is not an "archaic" law. It was put in place to prevent those ugly signs from tarnishing the beautiful landscape. Lord knows we have enough buildings and freeways on the island of Oahu that already do that. Secondly, although this group, "The Outdoor Circle" does good things for our land most of the time, they DO NOT speak for the rest of us that live here especially in this case. The Wienermobile made a stop in Hawaii in the '70's. I know I was there to see it. Most of us love the fact that it came here again. 6-12 complaints do not mean Hawaii as a whole doesn't love the Wienermobile. This article should state that a small group of people don't want it to return. Please understand, this group of people do not speak for the rest of us. Perhaps the Outdoor Circle "relish" their position in Hawaii a tad too much.

I think the law should be examined. I would Ban ugly billboards, city buses covered with advertisements from the outside, or any advertisement that promotes something bad or unlawful. Hot dog shaped cars, football shaped cars, etc... I think they are more a work of art. Why ? It is like banning artists.

Barney Frank wouldn't stand for this!!

The point though is asinine is duly noted, if the 'WeinerMobiles' ONLY purpose is to advertise then it would be stationary and hence would fall under the law, the law reportedly also bans vehicles whose sole purpose is to advertise, since it is not stationary, logic would dictate that it has a secondary purpose of transportation, I also hold at least a third purpose- as a sweepstakes prize winners ride for a day (maybe that would still fall under transportation. I guess Taxis should be banned too? they advertise themselves as a taxi and that is all they are??

Hawaiians need to turn a van into a giant can of Spam, because they eat lots of it! Contrary to the article, if you ever go see a traditional Hawaiian parade on Oahu, their is plenty of advertising of by businesses on the sides of the floats that carry their members. So to say that advertising on vehicles in Hawaii is banned is like saying that they never eat Spam or poi. The whole argument is just stupid. If someone had stuck a giant lei around the weinermobile, then no one would have complained. Seriously!

As we have all seen in the past years, a DUMB group complaining about something so stupid that it changes AMERICA again. Come on people give it a rest and find something that is constructive and beneficial to our America. Remember it is why you are here and if you dont like the way it is then get the Blank out. Maybe you will be appreciated in Siberia? oh you will bitch there too because thats what you do best
deb Jul 24th 2009 5:39PM
go figure.. a weiner that violates you.lolol
shelly Jul 24th 2009 5:41PM
I think these wieners should be banned. Calm down people, there are worse things in the world than seeing the wienermobile drive by. "Oh I wish I were an oscar mayer weiner. That is what I truly like to be. And if I were an oscar mayer wiener, everyone would be in love with me!" Take that haters!! :-p

Well , that was interesting. The 'thing' is back in Wisconsin now, just the other day the Female Driver drove the 'thing' into a home, couldn't get it backed out because She hit it so Hard .
She was promoted to accident prevention of Hell-On-Wheels .

This all stems from the fact the Kingdom was overthrown in 1898 and the decendents are still angry{rightfully so}.PS I saw a handmade billboard which I think took 4 4x8 sheets of plywood up on the Leeward coast and the content was whining against America and Americans. So much for hypocrisy.

They sure didnt mind when MTV moved 10-15 kids into a house..... Drove around the island in cars brandishing "MTV" along the sides.
Karine Jul 24th 2009 5:57PM

Personally I feel that hordes of fat people in small swimming suits create far greater visual blight with a far greater risk of serious psychlogical damage to young children.
mesaman Jul 24th 2009 5:59PM
Let's make a deal. If the complainers are polynesian, go with the ban. If it a few mainland carpetbaggers, I say, tell them to go to hell. They sound like the latter to me.
GMC Jul 24th 2009 6:03PM
Hey, there's another group out there who want a cancer warning put on all packages of hot dogs. They'll probably want one on the Wienermobile as well. As for Hawaii, it has been said before - it must be nice to have nothing better to worry about than whether or not the wienermobile comes for a visit.
dan Jul 24th 2009 6:05PM
a holes in Hawaii have got to be bored...... isn't that "supposedly" where ocrapa was hatched? Since he refuses to produce the long form. I don't give a crap who you are you have to ask WHY. Not one single other presidential candidate has had an issue with producing the long form.....just this poser. He will never get my vote again.

why is it that rotten journalism is acceptable?
the HEADLINE is complete trash
some nutcase in Hawaii doesn't like the Weinermobile and your website wants to trash Hawaii
Hawaii doesn't suck --- your web site sucks
