Hawaii says "stay away" to the Wienermobile
Apple pie, Baseball and the Wienermobile - seriously, there is not much more American than the iconic Oscar Mayer hotdog on wheels. People everywhere love seeing the Wienermobile, and contests are held yearly so people can get a chance to drive it themselves.
Unless of course you live in Hawaii. An archaic 1927 law bans all billboards on the Hawaiian islands, and a local organization claims the Wienermobile should be part of that ban. The group, Outdoor Circle, is pushing to keep the hotdog off the island forever.
The Wienermobile visited Hawaii for 3 weeks in July, and as far as Outdoor Circle is concerned, that is going to be its last visit.
According to the people behind the organization, "6 to 12 O'ahu residents complained". A 2006 law banning all vehicles with the sole purpose of advertising was also cited in the complaint.
The Honolulu mayor welcomed the Wienermobile to his city, and it was honored with an official "Oscar Mayer Wiener Day". The mayor is now looking into possible violations, but pointed out that no official complaints were received by them.
Sometimes you just wonder whether people are having such a hard time finding better things to do. Complaining about the Wienermobile violating a 1920's law just seems like a huge waste of time.

Maybe the real people of the islands need to VOTE those OLD LAWS OUT! Get them OFF the books. That's what we need to do here Also- There are SOOO many OLD law that don't need to be on the books anymore. And BOY do we need some new ones!!!

When did our States/Country get to the point that if six or seven people complain, then it is the new law of the land? I am so fed up with political correctness that I find it to a major abridgement of my Right to Free Speech. Good goodness there must be something else to do in Hawaii. Bring the Weinermobile to Texas where men and women are still free.

GET A LIFE PEOPLE, THERE ARE MUCH BETTER THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT THAN A WEINER

I really like the no billboards rule, but the weinermobile is an Icon, not an eyesore. The complainers need to "unclench".

I think it would be a GREAT investment tool for Madonna- She could RIDE on it whenever she enters a concert hall or arena--anywhere she goes- The wiener thing is a perfect match for her LIFE-STYLE-- She has an excelent past for riding on every guys wiener she has ever met-- Would be a tremendous publicity stunt!!!

somebody needs to get a friggin' life, aloha

The 6 to 12 people who complained are probably the people who make up the organization. This country is going to hell in a handbasket and they want to complain about the Weinermobile? Give me a break, and pass the buns while you're at it.

who cares about hawaii.......with all the crap about global warming and the ice cap melting.......we can only hope hawaii disappears and california falls into the ocean to me that would be a beautiful day......don;t have to worry about billboards then.....

Seriously, where do these assholes come from? Everyone has a grievance about something and wish to force their narrow-minded views on the entire population!!! Why not put this negative energy behind changing the human condition for the BETTER instead of this nitpicky self-centered crap that does more to infringe on the pursuit of happiness than make a valid point for actual improvement of current situations.

My understanding is if the weinermobile is delivering a 10 pack of hotdogs to a store, then the vehicle is making a delivery, and this skirts the sunshine law. Just like Budweiser trucks, etc.

Some people have too much time on their hands!

If you ban the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile today, then you also have to outlaw ever trailer on the highway with signage and pictures. Service and Utility trucks with signage is also a form of advertising too. Hawaii, can not pick and chose what is considered advertising on the side of a car, truck, semi, train or airplane.
Advertising is just that. An ambulance with anything other then emergency markings is also advertising. Taxi cabs also carry advertising on their sides as well. If you ban one.... you have to ban them all.
Good Luck in these economic times.
Best Wishes

The truck that drives around with a billboard, as is the case, fits the Hawaii law. The Wienermoblie doesn't, becasue it stops at grocery stores and other places to pass out stuff.
The Wienermobile is no different that a service truck with an ad on the side panel.

If it was the SPAMmobile there would not have been a problem!

Yikes, they are nuts. Planned 10 day group scuba dive now being re-scheduled for the Florida Keys.
Monica Jul 24th 2009 4:20PM
Billboards should be banned everywhere. Why? Because people should not be reading & driving. And allowing advertising to create demand = suckass economy.

"6 to 12 O'ahu residents complained" - Well, if 6-12 out of 900,000 people complained, then we definitely need to bend over backwards and give them what they want. Less than 0.0000001% of people complaining about something is what we need to force everyone else to conform these days.
