Hawaii says "stay away" to the Wienermobile
Apple pie, Baseball and the Wienermobile - seriously, there is not much more American than the iconic Oscar Mayer hotdog on wheels. People everywhere love seeing the Wienermobile, and contests are held yearly so people can get a chance to drive it themselves.
Unless of course you live in Hawaii. An archaic 1927 law bans all billboards on the Hawaiian islands, and a local organization claims the Wienermobile should be part of that ban. The group, Outdoor Circle, is pushing to keep the hotdog off the island forever.
The Wienermobile visited Hawaii for 3 weeks in July, and as far as Outdoor Circle is concerned, that is going to be its last visit.
According to the people behind the organization, "6 to 12 O'ahu residents complained". A 2006 law banning all vehicles with the sole purpose of advertising was also cited in the complaint.
The Honolulu mayor welcomed the Wienermobile to his city, and it was honored with an official "Oscar Mayer Wiener Day". The mayor is now looking into possible violations, but pointed out that no official complaints were received by them.
Sometimes you just wonder whether people are having such a hard time finding better things to do. Complaining about the Wienermobile violating a 1920's law just seems like a huge waste of time.

I happen to think their law banning billboards is a nice thing. I grew up in Vermont which has a similar law and it's refreshing not to be bombarded with advertising when driving down the road. The scenery is left unspoiled--and Hawai'i has some great landscapes it should keep protecting.
I'm not sure the Wienermobile has the same effect as a billboard--it's a moving vehicle and doesn't have the same visual impact on a landscape.

Wow. It must be nice to have something like that be such a high priority on the list of issues on hand in your state. Yay. No billboards, and we banned the Weinermobile! All is right with the world.

Get a life and focus on real problems. This isn't a billboard and hasen't the same affect on the landscape. It's temporarily here & there. It's an American icon that kids love to see, and would bring a smile to my face. Hi has real problems. They passed an Obama-like health care bill and cancelled it 7 months later. Why? It was designed for 15,000 kids w/o insurance, but 82,000 signed up - 9 out of 10 who signed up cancelled their own insurance and tried to get a free ride off of the tax payer. Geez, those unintended consequences will get you every time.

Why do these people need the Weinermobile in Hawaii? They don't. Shut UP! Do you NEED the weinermobile in Hawaii? NO. Then SHUT UP!
Is the weinermobile a permanant fixture in Hawaii? NO. Shut UP!
Can Hawaii make their own decisions in this free country? Yes. SHUT UP.
The real time wasters were the ones fighting FOR the Oscar Meyer Weiner

Yea, it must be nice not to have anything better to do with your time than to complain about the weinermobile coming to visit. People get so offended and let the tiniest little superficial things get to them now days. Pretty soon no one will be able to say "Hi" to another person walking down the street because it might offend someone else. Oh my, people really need to get a life and mind there own business! That weinermobile didn't hurt anything, besides your stuck up attitude.
Terry Jul 24th 2009 2:13PM
I believe there are more important things to be concerned with than the weinermobile. Like your government, drugs, corruption and laws that were written 100 years ago!
Wake up people ge a life!

Clint Jul 24th 2009 7:49PM
Would they be so upset if it were the spam-mobile???
Scott Jul 24th 2009 2:15PM
Seriously, somebody in Oahu bitched about the Weinermobile? Are you kidding? Come on. Get a life.
Danny Jul 24th 2009 2:18PM

I live here in hawaii and honestly its ridiculous!!! im a pennsylvania resident and the people here complain about the most asanine crap. Look up the "hawaiin super ferry" if you dont believe me. It was a nice, cheap way to get to maui and eventually the big island. A group complained and now it was sent back to the maker...i dont know anyone that wasnt very irritated/mad about the decision. It was not brought to public attention until it was too late. I am sick of people whining. Its the weinermobile its the same as putting advertisements on any personal car...which happens ALL the time here. Seriously quit complaining.

I can find 6 - 12 people to whine about sunshine. You gonna outlaw that too?
andrew Jul 24th 2009 3:14PM
we must ban this sunlight, it is hurting our children, and hurting our children is hurting our future. lol we must put a ban to darkness too. i know we can find like 9/10 people who dont like the dark. ban that too. so no sunlight, no dark we will live in a 4th demension where light nor dark can reach us. its more dangerous then guns in the hands of convicted felonys, and drugs in the hands of the idiot who thinks its okay to drink intoxicated. jesus this world is neck deep in shit.
Cearralyn Jul 24th 2009 2:21PM
What a bunch of idiots!! The weinermobile is NOT a billboard. It is not obstructing anyone's view or anything else. Some people, like the whiny, carping gripers in Hawaii, apparently have pea-sized brains or they would not feel that this is important.

This is the state that eats more Spam per capita than any other in the union. They are still angry about Puffa Puffa Rice cereal.

I live here in Hawaii and we have a well known saying for this type of person. We call these "C.A.V.E." people, citizens against vertually everything!Mahalo & aloha.

This law is an easy one to get around. Have the wiener "truck" deliver some dogs to local grocery store. There is no ban on "truck" advertising. Please pass the mustard.
armjoint1 Jul 24th 2009 4:09PM
Not true; there actually is a ban on truck advertising. Research it. I'm glad they have the band as if one allows the wienermobile to be here then that opens the doors for billboards etc. Hawaii is beautiful and doesn't need billboards, etc. I'm glad they have banned the wienermobile.
dave hogue Jul 24th 2009 2:27PM
I can see where banning or limiting the numer of billboards in certain places could be a good thing, but the Weinermobile? It's not like it's going to be in Hawaii permanetly.
Maybe we can work out a deal with Japan. Give them Hawaii and they cut the price on cars we import.
Bob Jul 24th 2009 2:27PM
Oh, good grief.
