I've been using L.A.'s Metro bus system since it was called RTD. What I will say is, yes...you can get around the L.A. metropolitan area with some ease but only with prior detailed preparation and knowledge of the system, AND if you are patient and have the additional time to wait for bus/train/subway arrival. I would never recommend using the system at night, although on many occasions I have done so. (I've had some scary encounters on the light rail and buses at night.) A typical 30-mile commute from metro LA to Downtown Long Beach for example would always take me about 1 1/2 hours...sometimes 1 hour and 45 minutes. Were I to drive, it would only take me about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. I can always spot tourists taking public transportation......they are always nervous-looking...especially on the light rail. If you are accustomed to using any type of public transport, then you should feel comfortable with LA's Metro.
