Apparently, everyone hates Detroit

TripAdvisor.com conducted a survey of 3,400 Americans, asking them their opinions about various cities. The result may or may not surprise you: Everyone loves New York and everyone hates Detroit (above), which was not only listed as the "Least Favorite," but also the "Least Healthy" and "Dirtiest."
Second and third place for least favorite city? Los Angeles and Atlanta. Why's everybody hating on Atlanta? They did win for "Nicest Sounding Accent."
San Francisco was the second favorite, and Boston and Chicago tied for third. Conversely, Boston also got "Most Annoying Accent." Clearly, these people have not been to my hometown of Minneapolis.
Other cities with mentions include Miami for "Sexiest" and Honolulu for "Most Romantic." Seattle got "Healthiest" and Washington D.C. got "Best Free Attractions." Cleveland got "Most Boring."
My favorite part of this survey:
Friendliest and Most Helpful: New York City
Least Friendly and Helpful: New York City
Ah, sweet paradox. I will forever argue that New Yorkers aren't mean, they're just fast. Almost everyone in New York will be happy to help you if you bottom-line your question.

You miss the point. You can't say Detroit is great because and give an example of a bunch of things going on in the suburbs. The suburbs are not Detroit. When people say Detroit is a modern day version of 1800's Tombstone city just filthier and more dangerous they mean Detroit city proper. They are not knocking any of the suburbs. It would be like me saying Mexico is a great place to live and then giving a bunch of examples about California to back it up. It doesn't work that way. By the way I love Detroit. The fights, hookers, drugs, liquor stores and strip joints where a blast when I was younger but I had to move when I got married. It just wasn't safe for a wife and kids but if I was single, I'd be right down there in the middle of it again.

I'm not a huge fan of Detroit these days and if I had my choice I wouldn't have selected it as the place I wanted to be born. However, back in the day when we were growing up, it was a great place to live. We had great friends, good schools, lots of fun, and loving families. These MORON journalists that write articles from bullshit "surveys" don't know their asses from a hole in the ground and shouldn't be professional anything other then attention junkies.
So the title of the article is "Apparently, EVERYONE hates Detroit" Hmmm that apparently means someone did a survey of EVERYONE or at least a LOT of people right? Wrong, only about 3,500 people. Well, then when they say EVERYONE, they must mean that of the 3,500 people surveyed, ALL of them (everyone) must have filled in the box "I HATE DETROIT" right? Wrong again. The survey results according to the article says that Motown is the "least" of the options given. The categories listed were "Least Favorite," but also the "Least Healthy" and "Dirtiest." Sorry, I don't see the word HATE anywhere except the one the "journalist" filled in. I wonder how many of EVERYONE asked had actually even been to Detroit.

KATZPJZ.. You are forever the dellusional apologist. The survey is speaking of the city of Detroit not some ambiguous "Detroit Area" or "Metro Detroit".
"FYI...If Detroit fails so does the suburbs" - , no they won't because Detroit has already failed but the suburbs are actually prospering. The suburbs do not rely on Detroit for employment, they do not rely on Detroit for commerce. The if Detroit fails so do the suburbs idea is a myth. If Chicago/New York/LA/whatever fails then yes their suburbs fail. Detroit exists in a totally different paradigm. Detroit's suburbs exist not because of Detroit but as an alternative to Detroit.
"Guess who supplies the water for the majority of the Metropolitan area?; The City of Detroit!" - So what? How does that make Detroit itself any safer, cleaner, or attractive?
" Guess who goes downtown for the fireworks, parades, concerts, sports games?; Suburbanites!" - Thank you. You restate one of my previous points. The last vestiges of anything decent in Detroit, concerts, sports, ect are supported by the suburbs inspite of Detroit. The actual citizens of Detroit attend very little of these events. Go to a Red Wings, Tigers, or Lions game and count how many people are there from the city of Detroit. Not many.
"There are plenty of places to visited in all of Metro Detroit." - This is the classic Detroit apologist arguement. "Detroit has great entertainment and dining! Try going to downtown Royal Oak once." Detroit is Detroit. Royal Oak is not Detroit. As I stated before, I could use the same ridiculous argument, "The northern Mexico area is beautiful and safe. Haven't you ever been to San Diego?"
And this is my favorite thing I get!
"With your attitude I just wonder; How many times do you go into the city? Or are one of those people who are to scared (bigoted) to cross the line...." - I lived in the city for over 18 years and go back to the city (and I mean the city unlike you, not warren, redford, hazel park, madison heights ect.) every Sunday. I still have family there.

I have lived in Chicago from 80-82, New York from 82- 86,
{{ "DETROIT-86-89" }} Arizona- 89-90, Wyoming-90-93, Nevada-93-2003, California-2003-2009.
Those are the states I lived in, I have seen/ visited most of the United States major cities. And I have visited England, Paris, Mexico, Canada. And MY OPINION is "DETROIT" IS the WORST City I have lived in or seen. Detroit used to be a wonderful city but that was many many years ago. I think the last time Detroit was GREAT was in the 60's and I doubt it will ever recover from its demise.

Let me add my experience. I lived in Detroit from '72 to 94'. I Have been to Toronto, New York, Pittsburg, Washington D.C., Charleston, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and more. Detroit is by far the most desolate and decayed city that I've seen. The closest thing that I have seen to Detroit is Tijuana Mexico, but Tijuana has a safer downtown with more to do. (That's not an attempt at humor.)
You want to be part of the solution and not the problem? To fix any problem you must start with honesty. Detroit will never turn itself around through denial or niave attempts at minimizing the problems.
