Great questions. I didn't wear them with socks in the mangroves because I knew they would be fully submerged in water. I did wear them with socks on the farm and they were beyond comfortable. Regarding your hike question, comfort-wise, they'd be great for day hike. However, they lack the tread of a true trail shoe, so if the terrain is going to be dicey, you may want to opt for something more suited for that terrain.
