Galley Gossip: Airline uniforms (plus a chance to win free tickets on Olympic Airlines)

Just like Cliff Muskiet, the uniform freak, I have a thing for airline uniforms. I think most flight attendants do. In fact, inside my guestroom closet hangs three different uniform styles from two different airlines. I've saved it all - the pants, the skirts, the dresses, the jackets, the vests, the blouses, the wings, and even the blue tie I snapped around my neck and the epaulets I wore on both shoulders with the pleated Bermuda shorts and high heels at Sun Jet International Airlines. Talk about embarrassing. I still own everything except for the silky red and blue scarf I wore thirteen years ago when I first got hired to fly for the airline I currently work for. Oh how I wish I still had that scarf. I wore it off to the side, tied in a knot around my neck. That simple scarf made the conservative navy blue polyester uniform appear sexy and feminine.
"I loved that navy blue coat dress we wore years ago," said Cady, an ex flight attendant who is also my very best friend.
Personally, I prefer the look of the white starched blouse paired with the navy blue knee length skirt and fitted blazer, even though I always end up wearing the uniform dress. As a commuter, I have to pack what's easy.
Now my all time favorite airline uniform is worn by the flight attendants of Air France. Though they look great, I'm not quite sure how I would actually feel about serving drinks while wearing the big red bow at 35,000 feet. Delta looks fantastic in navy blue with just a hint of red. However the white bell sleeves, while stylish, seem like they could easily get dirty. That could be a problem for me. I'm a bit of a mess when I get stuck working in the galley, and a dirty uniform is an ugly uniform. Emirates' uniform is pretty nice - that is if you look good in Khaki and don't mind wearing a head scarf. The worst airline uniform has to be First Choice Airways. I mean seriously, pink?
As I began writing this post, I wondered what others thought about all the different airline uniforms, so I posed the question, which airlines have the best uniforms, on twitter.com and here's what a few people had to say...
Flyingphotog: " I think Virgin Atlantic's uniforms are awesome. They'll make you turn your head. Well... at least if you're a guy they will. US Airways f/a uniforms are super-boring. -
Paulrobichaux: "I really like Delta's red-dress uniform. very classy looking."
-
HeatherMark: "I love Delta's red wrap dress. The fabric doesn't look breathable, tho. Those Virgin girls always look fabu, too.
-
Wkali13: "I'm partial to Delta's uniforms. They always look so professional."
-
CBI28: "best uniform: Air France-I love that dress with the red bow. Worst-First Choice in Britain, a.k.a. the pink flamingos"
-
Mathew: "Best - Quantas long haul. Worst is Virgin Atlantic & United Airlines
-
Brajit: "AAs uniforms are dowdy. Skybus uniforms were AWFUL! "
-
AKnickerson: "Worst? Don't know. But best: Korean Air. They are gorgeous! Very chic!"
-
Clipperkid747: "I like Lufthansa uniforms. They do look classy.
-
Tlonyc: "Got to like the laid back look of Southwest, but not as much as Delta. United and US Airways at the bottom."
- Stgabriel08: "if you are including foreign airlines, thumbs up to Emirates and Thai Air, thumbs down to Singapore Air"
-
Tyflyguy: "my vote for worst uniform HAS to be Southwest."
-
FlightattdntJen: "oh God!The old Air Canada green ones: HIDEOUS! Affectionately named by passengers as the "vagina dress" Yay for new ones!"
So why all this talk about flight attendant uniforms? Because Olympic Airlines' flight attendants and pilots are getting new uniforms and you can help choose the final design. You've got until June 7th to vote, so click here to go to the website and pick your favorite uniform design. A few voters will even be chosen to win airplane tickets to destinations in Greece and abroad! Warning: the website is not in English. But good luck anyway!
For those of you still with me, I hope you enjoy this youtube video featuring airline uniforms of yesterday and today...

Singapore Airlines uniforms are pretty slick! They always seem well tailored and fit just right! Just a thought. Keep up the good work Heather. Always enjoy reading your blog. We at AA need new uniforms bigtime!!

All in all I prefer the Lufthansa uniforms- add a string of pearls and I don't think you can look more professional serving that many people. The ones I despise are the ones which try to incorporate the button-down-shirtdress. I cannot imagine that being at all comfortable, and it's a really hard look to pull off. Also, scarves- yes. Floppy ties- no.

I really think the best domestic carrier uniforms are Delta! I love how the hints of red pop, with stylish tailored white oxford. I also am a fan of the "red dress" option as well. I don't mind AA uniforms as much as so many others, I just often find that red cardigan is worn so oversized on everyone, it often does look unprofessional and dowdy!!! My least favorite uniform def. goes to SWA, I think it's unprofessional to wear shorts to work.

While I love Delta's red dress uniform, I will never forget stopping in my tracks in Atlanta a year or two ago at the sight of a full Lufthansa flight crew walking down International Concourse E side by side. The crowd literally parted around them. All I could think of was my Dad's stories of flying TWA, Pan Am, and Eastern in the 60's and 70's through New York and Miami and thinking that THIS was as close as I'll ever see to that era.

I saw a crew from Delta get off at Brussels airport last week, and those red wrap uniforms don't work well with a big rear end. I felt sorry for the ladies who were on the "hefty" side, wearing those uniforms. They were definitely NOT flattering.

I was thinking this when I wrote my post, but didn't want to say it! haha...but you did! I agree with you, but they have the option to wear whatever uniform style they wish, and if they wanna pull it off, I say go for it! I think because the dress wraps, it's a little less forgiving, then say, AA's navy/poly potato sac dress.

The Emerites flight crew all wear the same red lipstick. Someone needs to tell them that red is NOT flattering on everyone. I don't like their uniforms. Very stuffy looking. However, they do think they are the creme de la creme of flight attendants, so they exude confidence. A bit too arrogant for me.

I am probably not very discriminating. I love them all. The video gave me a big grin. Any uniform looks wonderful when the person, male or female welcomes you aboard with that smile. I know they are just doing their job, but... that crash this winter brought to everyone's attention how little these people are paid as they pay their dues working at commuter airlines to move up the food chain. Imagine having to work part time at Starbucks to pay bills while you wait for your next flight. Most people wouldn't work the hours and serve a demanding public. It speaks volumes for those that do it well. A smile dazzles any uniform.

Oh please..it's their choice. Everyone starts out at the bottom of the totem poll and has to work their way up the "food chain". No sympathy from me! If you're going to complain about how rough you have it, get a different job!

Actually, those pilots who lost their lives in BUF didnt complain. They did what they had to do to survive doing a job that pays so little ($18,000) that the First Officier lived at home with her parents across the country. Long hours, low pay, constantly changing schedules make it hard for pilots to do their best. Will the profession find a way to attract the best and the brightest, even if the pay and benefits and schedules are not enticing? Do those years of paying your dues and poverty build character and allow the best to rise to the top, or are they just exhausting and disheartening -- and dangerous?
Remember, the most important safety feature onboard your flight is your CREW.

As a Delta flight attendant, I have to say I'm partial to our uniforms, absolutely love them. But Heather, you are right about the long white sleeves! Wear them one day and you're done! ;) I had mine tailored to hit just at the wrist though so now they stay much cleaner. The red dress is SO comfortable and actually the coolest uniform piece for the summer. You HAVE to have that dress tailored though...and...as an above poster stated...slimmer is better with that dress. ;-)
I think the worst uniforms are that of Freedom Air (New Zealand)...yellow with a big sunshine on it! I think Hawaiian Airlines "Muu muu" dress uniform is darling - I'd be tempted to wear it on my day off! But Air France is lovely, probably the best!
Brandi Jun 6th 2009 1:54AM
I wear the same uniforms, and women without breasts should STOP wearing the red dress. I'd rather see a curvier girl fill it out and fit her body then see the red sash (that is suppose to be under the breast) below the belly button because it can't be held up.

Uniforms are my pet subject, I could talk about them for days! There's too many to mention, but here are a few of my faves. I also love anything which has a bit of a retro touch, I suppose it brings back the 'glamour days'
Elegant: Etihad, Lufthansa, MEA (Lebanon), Qantas, BA, Air Berlin/Brussels, Czech Airlines, The retro (anniversary) Monarch, Singair (though obvious), Thai
Improved with redesign: Emirates, Delta,
Epic Fail at redesign: Air NZ- could have been so much better with better colour!
Colourful: SAA, Virgin Atlantic, Jetstar, the old First Choice

I like Singapore Airlines flight stewardess uniform, it is so tradisional and feminine look!
Anybody have any comments about Kuwait Airways' uniform?
Karl Jun 27th 2009 1:45PM
I am from Ireland and as for the three carries who have bases in I think Aer Lingus has the best followed by Aer Aaran and then Ryan Air which is just plane ugly.
Though internationally Delta has to be the best.

I have a girlfriend who was a Lufthansa stewardess in the 70's. We saw her uniform on the net - the yellow dress and coat. she still has the scarf and pill box hat, but regrets not keeping a dress. I would dearly love to get her one. Anyone selling or lending, perhaps you know a contact? Thanks.
