I couldn't agree more with what you've said here! In my case it's been camera envy for underwater photography. I plunked down lots of $$$ for a Canon Digital Rebel XTi and then spent thousands on an underwater housing. The result? I now had one more piece of luggage to check and drag through user-unfriendly airports all over the Pacific. I didn't even get many good pictures out of it, because I DIDN'T LEARN THE CAMERA. Lesson learned. Last year I purchased a Canon SD1100 IS point & shoot and got a tiny housing for it. The whole setup cost about $350 and fit in my carry-on bag. The result? Pictures like this one:

I couldn't be happier now, and instead of having camera envy when I see people on my travels, I have more of what I call camera pity - and am thankful it's not me lugging all that gear around!
