Sears Tower to open glass bottom box at 1300 feet

In July, the Sears Tower Skydeck will open "the ledge", its newest attraction.
The "ledge" is a glass box extending 4.3 feet out over the edge of the 103rd floor, offering an unobstructed view of the city. Up to 5 guests at a time will be able to stand on the inch and a half thick glass.
I have a lot of faith in structural engineers, but I'm just not sure I'd feel entirely comfortable stepping out on this thing? Would you?

I think it would be awesome. I went to the top of the Shanghai World Financial Center and walked across the glass bridge at 1555 feet above the ground. That's the highest observation deck in the world! It wasn't bad at all.

Only 5 guests at a time? Either it is for VIPs only or the admission will cost a fortune.

Hellooooo military ID perks...
But hey, even if they do charge for that, at least it'd offset the free admission the ID brings. :D
I was just there in February and the 103rd floor was closed so we only were able to go to floor 99 so this may be a reason to go up there again next time I visit.

The reason they only allow 5 guests is for safety reasons. Do you want to get a bunch of people out there and have it bust out from under you?

The reason they only allow 5 guests is for safety reasons not the cost!!
Do you want to get a bunch of fat people out there and have it crack under you?

The reason they are only letting 5 guests at a time is probably because of the weight that the glass will hold. It said that the glass is only an inch and a half thick. And without supports underneath it, it won't be able to hold very much weight.

Or six will make it topple!

id step out on it if was above the ground level to test it and to make sure it wont colaps and if i wore a parachute never know hen the big one will hit

One and a half inches does not sound like much glass.I like my feet on something I can not see through at that hight.I am terrified of height and I would not go on that thing wearing a parachute.I really don't understand why they put things like that up.I know well over half of people are not comfortable at that height. And only five people at one time.Does that mean there is a weight limit.

They forgot to tell you that you will be tied off. You will be hooked to a bungy just in case the glass breaks.

No...no...no...no...no...absolutely no need to temp fate. Not for me. I'm fine thanks. Then one day there will be an article in the news about the collapse of the Sears Tower's glass bottom box. Gee everyone thought it was so safe.

i bet all you who won't go out on it think nothing of walking across a pond in winter,
rwa325 May 4th 2009 7:00PM
A frozen pond isn't even remotely similar. There is water under the ice. The human body is buoyant in water. You stand an excellant chance of surviving a fall thru the broken ice of a pond. There is zero chance of surviving the catastrophic failure of a glass platform over 1000 feet in the air.
