While we were down there recently, we heard about the "Waitangi State Forest Massacre," which occurred in 1987. A single German shepherd was released into Waitangi State Forest and killed 800-1000 kiwis in six weeks.
With the number of predatory mammals introduced by humans (rats, stoats, etc.), a fair amount of New Zealand's bird life in general is under threat. We saw a number of ground traps laid out in forested areas around the country, being used to catch the foreign species.
Of course, when I was in the kiwi house in Queentown, I swear one of the kiwis did a leaping karate kick at me on the other side of the window... so maybe they still have some self-defense techniques we're not aware of. ;)
