UMA is simply impossible with this phone in Japan.
I have to agree that the UMA via WiFi calling feature is wonderful, but Tokyo is not definitely NOT the ideal city to use as an example for UMA calling with any bb curve model.
Keep in mind that for the UMA feature to work, your phone first must successfully register with a cell network. Only after it successfully registers can it switch to UMA (thus allowing calls via WiFi). WiFi without cell works only for data usage (email&web) but that's it (beware however that T-Mobile recently changed their data plans and you will pay per MB--dearly!--for non-email data usage outside of the US). So data in Japan with curve=Yes. UMA & texting in Japan with curve=No (SMS also uses cell network).
None of of the curve models are yet 3G, so they will never complete registration with any JP cell network.
I know this as a fact--I have the 8320, and have tried it myself in Japan. No dice. You need 3G.
