You've heard of the Alamo, but have you heard of Goliad? If you're a history buff, you need to visit Goliad, Texas, a little town in South Texas where the saga of Texas Independence from Mexico continued following the Alamo. Mexican forces faced off against Colonel James Fannin and his troops here (unfortunately, it did not end too well for Fannin, resulting in the "Goliad Massacre."). There is a Spanish fort, Presidio La Bahia, dating to the mid 1700s and a Mission Church, Mission Espiritu Santo, along with a historic courthouse district. (The presidio & mission complex is the last surviving example in Texas and one of the few in North America.)
