President Obama thinks 'Austrian' is a language?
By most accounts, President Obama had a pretty successful maiden voyage to Europe this past week. But it was not without its gaffes.
But relative to the era of George W. Bush, this one seems pretty minor.
In response to a question from an Austrian reporter about his impressions of European leaders, President Obama said that in fact the interaction between European lawmakers was really not all that different than the way in which the US Senate operates (it's unclear whether he meant to draw the comparison between the two sides as examples of people who can't seem to get things done).
Elaborating, President Obama said on both sides of the Atlantic "there's a lot of -- I don't know what the term is in Austrian -- wheeling and dealing -- and, you know, people are pursuing their interests, and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics."
Of course, there is no such language as Austrian, though if you're a speaker of high German hearing a Viennese speak can seem like you're hearing a different language. But that's more of an issue of dialect. Austrian German is certainly night and day more intelligible than Swiss German, which can be nearly impossible to understand even for native German speakers.
Anyway, my guess is most people missed this little misstatement, and just as well as in the scheme of things it matters not ounce.

High Five! The country needs to be together facing tough times, not pointing fingers like little school children. The problems are facing everyone, not just one stupid party or the other.

MAYBE THIS """TOGETHERNESS""" THAT YOU AMERICANS SO LOVE SHOULD HAVE COME WHEN YOUR DEMOCRAT PARTY PEOPLE STARTED BLOCKING ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THAT HAD TO DO WITH KILLING TERRORISTS???? YOU ELECTED THE WRONG PERSON. IN EUROPE, ITS EASY TO SEE HOW THE AFRICANS GO TO 2 DIFFERENT CHURCHES, THE MUSLIM MOSQUES AND THE ""CHRISTIAN""" CHURCHES WITH THE LIKES OF THAT SCAG WRIGHT.

Kathleen, we do have a lot in common. We have an absurdly foolish POTUS (only God knows how he got elected) who can't speak straight without a teleprompter, who goes to Europe to insult America, who declares we are a secular nation which is so untrue, who bows, subserviently, to a Saudi prince and then the WH lies and says it's not a bow (I am not subservient to ANYONE because I am an American.....land of the free), who wants to release terrorists into our country, who spends his time constantly blaming the previous administration for all of his problems (of course pointing blame instead of understanding personal responsiblity is a very liberal-left behavior), who has increased our deficit 10-fold in a matter of months, who wants to weaken our defense in a day when No. Korea and Iran are threatening nuclear anihilation, whose weaknesses, naivete, and failures have emboldened even ignorant pirates to attack an American ship............oh yeah, we have an unheralded number of things "in common". Let's start dealing with this singular problem that is the source of so many others.

That's the problem, liberals and conservatives have nothing in common. Liberals hate America and blame us for all of the Worlds problems. Liberals believe the government is the answer to all problems, Conservatives believe government is the problem. Conservatives believe in rewarding hard work and success. Liberals believe in penalizing hard work and success and rewarding laziness and sloth. Conservatives believe everyone is equal. Liberals believe some are more equal than others. Conservatives believe in personal responsibility. Liberals believe in NO responsibility.

Sure, Kathleen, idiots like you really rallied around and supported Bush, right? No, you spent eight years whining and moaning. Now that you've elected a moron, like yourselves, you expect the knowledgeable to roll over and play dead? Oh no. We're going to hold him to the fire and pray he doesn’t bring war here; it’s pretty obvious he is against the United States. He’s going to be held accountable! What goes around comes around.

OK, Lets focus on what unites us: Except for left wingers, we all agree that Obama is a narcisistic, socialist, punk who isn't qualified or smart enough to be the mayor of a one horse town.

I lived in France and yes, I heard people say that Austrians spoke Austrian to differentiate from people from Germany. They never put "Austrian German" together. Obama is wordly enough to use the most common appellation.

It's the same difference between Austrian-German/Germany German and British-English/American-English, nicht wahr?

With so many leaders of NATO and the G20 saying that Obama's economic plans are "the road to hell" it is now a consensus that he is the thing they wanted most...a weak and ignorant US President. He is a laughing stock and it isn't funny. He an his wife are both ignorant goofs. Dumb and Dumber. Every American should be embarrassed.

Boy, I NEVER heard THAT when Bush was in office, "it's not important"!!!!!!!! Who are you and WHERE do you live???? If the media would just report the news, accurately and without comment WE THE PEOPLE would be much better served. AND we would be able to believe what we read!!!!
violin_rocks Apr 8th 2009 8:49PM
Minor compared to the Bush era??? What is THAT about. Bush would have NEVER made that mistake. He and Laura understood the concept of foreign protocol and etiquette; something Barry and Michelle should take a crash course in.

This latest crap makes me glad that I did not go to school and get any fancy degrees. Appears that common knowledge was lacking in his education.
Then again, his latest theme song appears to be the Brenda Lee great....I"M SORRY..........
Marc Apr 8th 2009 9:06PM
Ah, I think I'll let this one slide. After all, there is Austrian German, so in a way he didn't make a mistake. Bush made a big mistake by going to Australia and giving the thumbs-up sign (which is their version of the finger). THAT's a mistake - not this.
