Shanghai is a city of 19 million people yet the street where I lived seemed like a country village. Every day was the same and different. The same shopkeepers, high rise residents, students crowding one another to buy after school snacks, traffic noise, but different exotic looking seasonal fruits, itinerant food vendors, live animals in the market, and rickshaws loaded with myriad things. I cannot speak Mandarin so on the margin of my American thought I noted interesting points for conversations with myself during my week day subway rides to work.
