The next hidden fee - Spirit Airlines to charge a fee for buying a ticket?
Nope - this is not an April fools post. Spirit Airlines, one of the cheapest of the US low cost carriers is working behind the scenes to introduce a "passenger usage fee" which is just a snazzy way of describing a fee to cover the costs of you buying a ticket. That's right - Spirit Airlines is going to charge you, in order to charge you. The fee is rumored to be $5 or $10, and will apply to any booking made anywhere other than the Spirit Airlines ticket desk at your airport.
The whole thing sounds like a joke gone bad, but it is actually the result of negotiations with the Department of Transportation.
Spirit had initially launched a whole lineup of ridiculous fees last year, including what they called a "natural occurrence interruption fee"; a $2.50 fee to help recover the costs involved with storms and other weather related incidents. The DOT was not amused, and Spirit was handed a $40,000 fine.
Spirit clearly learned their lesson, because this time they are negotiating with the DOT how to implement these new fees. One area of concern is whether Spirit will be forced to include the fee in all their advertising, or whether they can keep it hidden until the last moment, usually when you and I pull out our credit cards. The end result may be that they need to advertise it on their own site, but that third party booking sites won't be forced to mention it until the last page of your booking process.
In my opinion, the whole fee process is just becoming silly - yes, we consumers are always looking for nice cheap tickets, but we are not entirely stupid. When a $100 ticket becomes $200 after all the fees and taxes, we know we are not getting a good deal. Fingers crossed that the DOT keeps us in mind when they finally approve this new fee racket.

I realized when I made the post that the concept in and of itself was fraud, however, everything that is done to us as consumers lately in the form of fees and taxes is also fraud since they are made up phony charges designed solely to empty our bank accounts. Perhaps if I gave it a better name such as a fee to the service provider for perhaps - service utilization fee - perhaps that would make it a bit more plausible. No more bizarre than the fees assessed for providing us as consumers with a service. After all, paying for the service used to be the cost of getting the service. You shouldn't have to pay a fee in order to pay the amount owed for the service.

We just flew Spirit Air this week. After booking my tickets online, I was promptly accosted with not only the luggage fees, but a fee to pick our seats! It was $9 for an aisle seat and $15 for a window seat--per person, each way. I refused to pay the fee, figuring that we had tickets in hand, they would have to let us get on the plane! Sure enough, when we got to the airport to check in, we were able to pick our own seats for FREE. At the gate, a Spirit ticket agent asked all passengers who had printed boarding passes at home to come up to the desk because "we tend to have a lot of problems with those e-tickets." Thankfully, we did not fall for the seat fee--which would have given us the print-at-home boarding passes. Do not pay this seat fee unless you just have to have a certain seat. If you arrive at the airport early enough, there should be plenty of unassigned seats available to ensure you and your traveling companion(s) can sit together.

I truly and honestly hope that Spirit Airlines goes broke. It is an insult to customers to charge them
for making a reservation. Shame - shame - shame.

I LOVE this idea. Since I just completed a trip (and therefore have proof of a recent business transaction with Spirit Air), I have copied your verbage and am planning to send a letter tomorrow. I don't expect anything in return, but if this thread is still accessible and I do get a reply, I will post an update.

Why is the govenment pocketing the $40,000 fine for charging consumers ridiculous fees? What's our retribution?

Spirit Air to my way of thinking is the Greyhound Bus of Airlines. Flew them once and that was enough.
I'm strickly a Southwest fan all the way. Great service, great fares and super friendly flight crews. Alaska Airlines is another good airline. Those are my opinions for what it's worth.

I have flown over 100 times and have never used the bathroom, but bet your ass if I ever have to fly on a plane that charges to use the bathroom. I will pay to use it but I will shit all over the floor, and Tolit. And come out with a big ass smile on my face, and say I couldn't make it to the tolit sorry.
