Always wondered about the TCAS. Does it actually force the aircraft down (or up) or is the manuovure completed by the pilot?

It's just an alerting system, so the pilot has to disconnect the autopilot (if it's on) and climb or descend in the direction indicated. It also doesn't provide any lateral commands, such as "turn left now"–only vertical advisories.
