The Marrakech Medina was one of the most fascinating places I've ever been, anywhere on earth. As you said, a guide is a great resource, but I also enjoyed getting completely lost and just stumbling down some of the back alleys. Having a compass can actually help you get your bearings too.
Tom, if you're still there, I highly recommend you eat the street food in the Djemaa el Fna at night. I'm thinking about the merguez and fresh orange juice right now...
