That still doesn't really justify the price. For that extra $25 I can go directly from doorstep to doorstep. With the Acela price you're comparing it to, I still have to get to and from the train station.
And besides, why should an airplane, which uses so much fuel, requires so much staffing, and is just generally so expensive per flight to operate, ever be even CLOSE to competitive with the train?
Also, while multiple-hour delays on the tarmac do happen, they are usually shorter, and rarely long enough to account for the 5 hour difference between rail and plane.
It's especially unforgivable when you consider how much less time it takes to go almost the same distance from Paris to London on the Eurostar.
