Smoking hurts on Saudi airline
For a smoker, nothing is more miserable than staring down a long flight without being able to light up. As if air travel isn't enough of a chore, various regulations and health nuts have taken away our preferred coping mechanism. A Sudanese man fought back ... and paid dearly. According to the Daily Mail, the passenger lit a cigarette on a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight from Qurayyat to Jeddah. The cabin crew repeatedly asked that he put out the coffin nail, and he refused. So, when the plane touched down, he was arrested.
Saying sorry wasn't enough.
Though he apologized in court and presented evidence that he was in a smoking cessation program, the perp was sentenced to 30 lashes. Hey, the judge wanted to prove a point. And, it could have been worse. Last April, another in-flight smoker was sentenced to 50.
Not only does smoking kill ... it hurts like hell.
Though many human rights organizations condemn this form of punishment, it is quite common for a number of offenses, from adultery to being alone with a non-relative of the opposite sex. Some crimes can lead to thousands of lashes, but they are meted out in batches of 50 over a period of months.
What gets you 1,000 lashes? I don't know, but I suspect a post-coital cig after joining the mile-high club would put you in the running.

I am not sure how you can suggest that your right to damage others health exist.
Said another way:
You do not have a RIGHT to make me miserable, sick, or to make my clothes stink!
If you want to smell horrible and look stupid do it in private not in public. Then you can make your familly and especially your children (that don't get the choice) deal with your nastiness as much as your conscious will allow.

Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a pool....
MacDaddy Feb 5th 2009 12:10PM
You dont have ANY RIGHT to MY LUNGS and what goes in them just as I dont have any right to say what goes in yours. You can go home and have cigarette sticking out of every orifice you have and as long as I or my family dont have it going into THEIR LUNGS have it it !

I am an non-smoker and i support people's right to breathe "clean" air (even though if you live in a city, cigarette smoke is by no means the only deadly poison that you breathe in), but i feel that regardless of how much you may hate someone smoking, that doesn't give you the right to abuse them. What if a person addicted to food was treated in the same manner as a person addicted to cigarettes. labeled and every time they picked up a hamburger a random stranger told them they should quit eating those coffin nails? that would be consider incredibly rude and insensitive. what would you feel like in their shoes? even when some is smoking outside in designated area's they receive dirty looks from strangers. i don't think smoking indoors is right, but nether is treating random strangers with disrespect. just chill out and walk away

you are selfish and self serving! Your rights a terminated when you force other people to take in your filthy air. If you want to kill your self, don't come to anyone to pay for your health care. It's a proven fact your kind require more health related services!
tom Feb 5th 2009 12:51PM
Please understand that we don't care how much you pay in taxes. The cost of paying for your lung cancer or other disease far outweights it. Would you like it if I came to your house and lit up some incense?
Devonshire Feb 5th 2009 12:57PM
hey Donna can all us non smokers fart repeatedly in your face while you like up that repugnant ciggy?
watdafuk Feb 5th 2009 1:40PM
And where do you morons live that you think you are breathing nice clean air in the first place?
Donna Feb 5th 2009 1:42PM
To the few that are respectful of my opinion...THANK YOU. But I also must say that it truly amazes me that there are so many out there that attack just because someone's opinion differs from their's. I respect their opinions even though they differ from mine. My original post was exactly that...MY OPINION!!! I am entitled to that without being called stupid or a moron. And as a final note...those that are saying that I/we pollute their clean air? Well you must be living on some uninhabited mountain top somewhere because every inhabited place in the USA has smog so thick you could cut it with a knife!

Donna, you say "Instead of taking away our right to smoke, instead of making snide comments to us or giving us dirty looks every time we "light up", remember that tobacco sales are one of the largest money-makers for this country." "A", that isn't true. Drugs are, and especially drugs to treat cancer, which smoking causes. People make snide comments because they are absolutely amazed that people continue to smoke when they know that it can kill them and can kill their children. Unfortunately, you are in major denial and would prefer to have your addiction than consider that what you are doing is inconsiderate and can hurt other people. Not to mention that it smells atrocious and that it is a very dirty habit. You can't smell it, because you are immune because you smoke. It has destroyed your sense of smell. I wonder if you also are one of those smokers who throw their cigarettes right on the ground when you're done? Do the laws of littering and commen courtesy not apply to you because you suffer from an addiction? I say, find a place to smoke, where you are alone and only you can be affected, because don't for a moment think it's not a big deal, because it is. One day you will look back and wish you hadn't smoked, but let's hope it doesn't come too late for you. That would be a big shame and one that too many people realize too late.

Well said !

Good post DONNA.
Have you seen some of the comments posted below yours? Go lick the floor in Grand Central Station?? Some doof is comparing THAT to smoking?
If people are gonna get cancer from "second hand smoke" they're gonna get it anyway, from something. What I love is when some Large Marge waddles up and tells me it's bad for me. Comes into the Smoking Allowed space and brays I shouldn't smoke. ??? I do not expose others to my smoke. The man in this article should not have lit up on an airliner...wish he'd been fined, not lashed but hey. Self-righteous I'm-better-then-you-'cause-I-don't-smoke freaks lighten up.
FA's Mother Feb 7th 2009 4:17PM
Donna, if you choose to smoke and the airline doesn't allow it on their flights, may I suggest you walk instead? You can light up all the cigarettes you want in the great outdoors, and since it will take longer to get to your destination, you can smoke that many more cigarettes *LOL*
Mikie Feb 5th 2009 6:38AM
Good for them! I would have given him the 50 lashes. Prick deserved it! Guess he will think twice about lighting up again and endangering a plane full of passengers so he can suck his cancer stick.
dude Feb 5th 2009 6:50AM
Yeah us darned "health nuts".. just because we don't want to die hacking up blood and blackened bits of lung tissue like smokers do, we are "nuts". Hey smokers.. how about if i put you on a plane or in a room or sit you at the dinner table and start farting in your face? Would you like that? How about if my farts contained cancer causing compounds? I bet you would like that even more. So... STOP FARTING IN MY FACE!!!!
granny Feb 5th 2009 8:10AM
then get your FACE out of my ASS.
OldFartsSuck Feb 6th 2009 6:41AM

dude Feb 6th 2009 7:21AM
No granny... get your ass out of the room. Believe me my face is as far away from your saggy ass and dried up cootchie as it can get.
kim Feb 5th 2009 6:50AM
There isnt another word that fits this story more perfectly then Awesome. If someone is stupid enough to smoke and then does it on a airtight container the least he deserves is 30 lashes. Im so tired of smokers and their "rights" no one cares about your rights because its a health hazzard for the rest of us.
Donna B Feb 5th 2009 12:43PM
If you think you are tired of smokers, you have no idea how tired smokers are of you, and your attitudes of being so much better then a smoker when you all have some kind of addiction no matter what it is. Could be religion, sex, diet, over eating. But you got something other people don't like and get sick and tired of.
