While you would think it would be standards would be uniform for chain hotels/motels, it's all up to the individual site to enforce these standards. The cheapest room I ever stayed in was a LaQuinta in Virgina Beach. Not the waterfront but the location on Newtown. $41.00 a night (with AAA discount about 4 years ago). The place was spotless and the staff was extremely pleasant. Much nicer than some more expensive and "prestigious" places I've stayed at. My point is, you have no way to know until you get there.
