Dirtiest Hotels in the United States
Hotels are filthy places. As fellow Gadling blogger Scott recently told us, hotel rooms aren't always cleaned as well as we would like. Imagine how many people have touched that television remote before you arrived. Or, for your sanity's sake, don't. And for the love of all that you consider holy, do not run a blacklight over your sheets and bedspread. But some hotels are filthier than others. And the folks at TripAdvisor have used reader reviews to compile their annual list of Dirtiest Hotels in the United States.
New York City (where I live) is home to two of the "top" three dirtiest hotels. Coming in at number one is the Hotel Carter and at number three is the New York Inn. The reader reviews for the Hotel Carter don't pull any punches.
Roaches, rats, mice, horrible smells, dirty sheets, horrifying bathrooms, outlets that hang out of walls...
This hotel was the filthiest, most unsanitary place I have seen ever. From the smell when you walk into the room to the plastic wrapped around the mattresses.
There are bed bugs in this hotel and you don´t easily see these bugs, but after one night you see the bites and they itch terribly for many days!
Welcome To Hell.
It could be worse than bed bugs, though. You could find a corpse under your bed, which a housekeeper at the Hotel Carter did in 2007. The upside to this story? It proves that they have housekeepers!

If no one likes dirty....why do YOU make it dirty? This proves my point of how some people are filthy as hell.

Please be informed about this University Study about Pyrethroid and Insecticide Resistant Bugs in New York and potentially other states also.
This extensive research & study concluded by toxicologists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Korea’s Seoul National University shows that some Bugs have developed resistant to Pyrethroids
which are commonly used to eradicate and control bugs.
We thought such independent University study and research will not only enlighten us about such mutations and resistance but also to seek alternative or effective Organic Pest control products.
Because Organic products clogs the breathing pores on the insect's ( pests ) body death is due to asphyxiation or due to Molting ( prematurely ) and they die by freezing.
Additional information about this University Study is posted on our Blog : http://xerobugs.wordpress.com/

I was on my way to Florida for a vacation we stopped in Georgia for the night it was 3 in the morning and we was too tired to drive we spotted a hotel off the highway and grabbed it.We got to our room and it smelled like cat pee.We had to put our suitcases in front of the door because it would not lock then I pull the sheets down and some one had shaved their pubic hair on the bed and they never changed the sheets !!!! The sink drain pipe was gone and the water went strait to the floore. We go the HELL out of there fast.
Come to find out when people cook meth it smells like cat pee !!!! I could have died.It could have expolded .I dont even want to think about the toxins I breathed in.
Moral of the story is PLAN YOUR ROAD TRIPS.BOOK ONLINE so you know what you are getting into!

ALSO: LaQuinta adventure
Someone I know who stayed in a LaQuinta turned the lights out to go to bed, pulled the covers over himself, & noticed that the mattress & covers he was sandwiched between were drenched. The last guest had pissed in that bed, & no one bothered to clean it!

While you would think it would be standards would be uniform for chain hotels/motels, it's all up to the individual site to enforce these standards. The cheapest room I ever stayed in was a LaQuinta in Virgina Beach. Not the waterfront but the location on Newtown. $41.00 a night (with AAA discount about 4 years ago). The place was spotless and the staff was extremely pleasant. Much nicer than some more expensive and "prestigious" places I've stayed at. My point is, you have no way to know until you get there.

Chris, think before you speak, please. While we might book the Royal Horseguards (which I do) on our own dime, we might be part of a wedding party or on a business trip, reserved & paid for by the company. In my case, I didn't find out 'til I got there, where I was booked & had to stay with the group. I don't owe you an explanation but perhaps a tip: Don't sleep with your mouth open:)

You get what you pay for. So, just remember that when you decide to stay at an "economy" hotel/motel to save a few dollars. I operate a Marriott property and they have extremely high standards and regularly inspect to ensure those standards are being upheld. The bedding, including the blanket, is changed/washed between each guest. The room is inspected prior to being listed as "vacant ready" in the system - and we use black lights (not on every room, but enough to spot check each room attendant) to ensure traces of past guests have been erased.

We NEVER stay at Days Inn or anything comparable to that. You are asking for trouble.
ALSO - if unsure ASK to see the rooms before you pay. I always make reserv. at at least 2 hotels when traveling. That way we have a choice if one is bad.
The WORST hotel we've ever been in was in downtown Detroit (the Omni or one of those big ones). I was on business, did not make the reserv and was not paying. If I had been we would have gone to another hotel.

As a flight attendant for 18 years, I've seen some NASTY hotels (both domestic and international). We stay at NICE hotels. I've gone into rooms, late at night, with someone ALREADY SLEEPING in the bed! I always check the sheets! There have been NUMEROUS times that the sheets were nasty . . .not changed from the previous "guest or guests" (if ya know what i'm saying . . . wink, wink, nudge, nudge). ALWAYS check your linens.

Why is the Carter Hotel still open? Isn't there a health inspector in the area. If rooms are being used for welfore housing, why doesn't the state inspect them? Fix it or shut it down! Yuck! Nobody should have to live that way.

Why is the Carter Hotel still open? Aren't there any health inspectors in NY? There is no excuse for what I have read and the pictures I have viewed. That is beyond disgusting and a down right health hazard. Shut it down! You would think if it is used for welfare housing that the state would get involved. Unbelievable.

You get what you pay for it. Some people looking for room under $30.00. and worse part is they looking for free breakfast and internet service. how in the world those hotels & motels afford to provied the service they ask for it, less than $ 100.00 rates?

As soon as I read the title of your article my mind immediately went to the dirtiest sleaziest hotel I have ever stayed at. Sure enough as I looked down to the picture I saw Hotel Carter. That place is such a dump. I took my fiancé into the city for a weekend for our Anniversary, we saw strawberry fields (Beatles cover band) at BB Kings Blues club, ate at the hard rock cafe, went to Madame Tussauds wax museum and spent the night at Hotel Carter. We had just gotten engaged so I wanted this to be a huge anniversary celebration, but I was 19 at the time so I didn't have allot of money for a hotel room so I got the cheapest one near the places I wanted to take him. When we walked up to our room there were lights out in the hall the rugs were a little torn and it was pitch black in the little area to go into the room. then when we got in the outsides of the windows were covered in dirt bugs and bird poop and the entire inside of the room was dirty the mattresses are covered in plastic I remember thinking that was really weird. Then the shower! It was so dirty there was no way either of us wanted to shower in it. When I got home from NYC the first thing I did was take a hot shower and scrub as hard as I could lol

I never drink out of the glasses in Vegas. Have you ever seen clean glasses on the cleaning cart? The mais wash them and then use your dirty to dry them. I always bring paper cups. This is also for the top hotels in Atlanta.

The comments about Days Inns are correct. Our company pays for about 500 to 600 nights lodging a year. We WILL NOT stay at a Days Inn. We will dive another 100 miles if needed or pay for a 5 Star hotel if we have to, just to stay away from from Days Inn. Needless to say we have had numerous problems with this hotel chain all over the country.

Worst hotel stay was at Sleep Inn in Grosseclose, VA (extremely economical at $40) WORST experience!....BEST economical stay was at The Holiday Inn Express Woodstock, Shenandoah Valley, VA. I-81 Exit 283. Cleanest hotel, crisp sheets, super sparkling bathroom, super friendly staff. Best $70.00 spent for a hotel (with AAA). I didn't want to leave :(

The Days Inn was so nasty that they were taking people to an office to settle up with them. That was at the Wisconsin Dells. That was the nasties place I had ever been.
