Confessions of a hotel maid - read if you dare!
I'm pretty sure I won't have to tell any of you just how unsanitary many hotel rooms are. We've all heard about the exposés on TV where someone would shine a CSI style ultraviolet lamp around the bed, lighting up the kind of stains you really wish you had not known about.
MSNBC has posted an article from a former hotel housekeeping staff member - and the story may make you think twice about drinking out of the bathroom cup.
For starters, after several weeks on the job, she decided that using the vacuum was just too much work, and simply picked the worst of the crumbs off the floor by hand.
Once she learned the in's and out's of how the room inspector worked, she even stopped cleaning sinks and simply wiped them dry to make them appear clean. Sometimes she was not in a "scrub the tub" kind of mood, and simply did a quick spray and wipe.
Thankfully she informs us that she never skipped changing the sheets - apparently even a hotel maid has her limits as to how low she will go.
Of course, things are not just bad for the guests. The housekeeper describes an incident where someone had soiled their bed linens so badly that all the sheets had to be disposed of in a biohazard bag. Sleep well!

Here's a way to at least help the next guest...pull the sheets off the bed and leave them in a "neat" but rumpled pile. It's much easier to make a bed with clean folded sheets than to straighten a pile of dirty ones and put them back on. If all guests did this, maybe we'd all sleep better.

I remember arriving in Vegas very late/early morning and was tired and I got to my room at the Luxor and it had not been cleaned yet from the previous guests. It was disgusting!! There was stinky ashtrays, food, bottles, and even...the most disgusting site ever seen in a hotel room......bloody bikini underwear!!! I immediately called the front desk and they said I could still have that room and they would clean it instead of having to move my luggage, etc. and I said, "NOOO...I definitely want another room. As far as not knowing if hotels change the sheets every night.....I ALWAYS PUT A SMALL PEN MARK ON THE SHEETS AND PILLOWCASE AND CHECK AFTER THE MAID HAS BEEN IN!

Better wipe down the TV remote before you use it, they have been found to have gross contamination including fecal material from dirty hands.

A few years ago when we had our NDHS school's 50th reunion at the Adams Mark Hotel, downtown Dallas, I turned back the sheets and saw hair and the appearance of "not so smooth" sheets. I've since had an occassion to stay there for convention, however declined to stay there from the disgust I still have. We've travled a lot and I always carry a spray can of Lysol and immediately "wet" spray everything in the bathroom, even the floor tho we don't walk barefoot on it. In the bedroom I also spray tables, chairs (put extra towels on them) remotes, door knobs, etc., and never walk barefoot on the carpets. Thank God even some of the nicer hotels are now using sealed and wrapped plastic glasses.

the rooms are dirty...but then the maids go through your luggage...when you are out...and more good news...ask who has a pass key or card to all the rooms at a hotel...the maids...head of housekeeping...maintenance...it goes on and on...i once had a maintenance guy pull some crap about replacing the tv...and then the air conditioner...when i asked about this at the front desk...they knew nothing of it...be aware...

okay top this hotel nightmare!
staying in a decent hotel just outside Ballard washington and got into room........
Noticed bathroom door had a big notch at top...like 1/2 inch...and the door knob was bent up....Being a cop I just knew what happened....someone hung themselves using the bathroom door..
My husband went into the bathroom as soon as we got our bags in and he shut door and immediately came out...the inside of the door as well as inside walls were covered in "dirt" and had markings where the person struggled......
THEY NEVER CLEANED UP!
I know this stuff happens all the time in hotel rooms BUT MY GOD clean up

My wife and I and two children once checked into a hotel (3 bedroom suite) in Myrtle Beach, SC. When my wife went to put clothes into a dresser, she found about one inch of marijuana covering the entire bottom of the dresser drawer. When we complained to a manager, he joked that "we should have smoked it" and said asked if we could imagine how much dope the bikers who stayed there the previous week must of have brought with them if they left that much behind!

WOW! Some of this really has my stomach turning! I am not a germaphobe but the thing with the used condom and the bloody underwear really has me nauseated lol. I knew some guys from high school that ended up working in housekeeping at one of the hotel/casinos in Laughlin...they were young boys and did terrible things that will not allow me to leave my toothbrush behind when I leave my hotel room for the day. They cleaned toilets with toothbrushes and also used them to scratch their arses! (I am not joking people lol) They went through the guest's belongings and brought home expensive perfume and cosmetics to their girlfriends. So, even beyond the lack of cleanliness in hotel rooms, there are things such as these to worry about. There is nothing we can do about it, so I guess what we don't know can't hurt us. I just always try to put out of my mind what might've gone on in the bed I'm sleeping in before I got there...and always take my toothbrush with me as a rule. :)

These people ought to be ashamed of themselves. You know weather they think about it or not, some people stay in hotels because of their jobs, this is supposed to their home away from home and they pay for this service when they shell out $100+ a night. I wonder if they would like for the health dept to do regular inspections of these places. I think they should, if people wanted to stay in that kind of filth then they'd be staying at some off the wall pay by the hour whore hotel, cause that seems to be the case we are shelling out all this $$ for class when it's nothing more then the pay by the hour place when it comes to cleanliness. Since my husband is in a hotle for 28 days a month all over the east coast maybe a copy of this artical be sent to each and every hotel he stays. They should have enough pride in their jobs to clean as if they were living there themselves, or maybe they are.

To ensure that I have a clean hotel room, I ALWAYS find out before I book if it is American Owned and operated. I worked in the hospitality industry for years and have partaken in two hotels that went from American to Indian owned and each time the cleanliness and standards went WAY down. It is sad, but true.

TIP your maids! They work SO hard and are treated like second hand citizens. I leave our room as clean as I can and always leave $5-10 per day because I do have a 10 and 12 year old and thatpopcorn makes it all over!

Jack says....he doesnt see anything wrong with the maid rinsing her mop out in the toliet bowl.... Guess what Jack you tool......not all the poop goes straight down. Ever hear of splash back? Almost every hotel I have stayed at, I find hair in the tub. Almost every time they have comped my room. SILENCE IS THE VOICE OF COMPLICITY

i stayed at a howard johnson's in Winter Haven, Fl. for 4 days, the "maids" were from India, man and wife, they only once emptied trash and ran vacuum. When I asked for additional coffee cups the man acted like I wanted gold. The sheets were never changed.

I stayed at the Embassy Suites in Secausus, NJ and went to microwave my latte from earlier that morning and found a used condom in the microwave. Not only did they not offer to move me/comp my room/ or offer any compensation, but they laughed at my predicament. I was so appalled, at both the occurance itself, but of their reaction. If they don't check the obvious, what else are they neglecting?????

o.k yeah it is gross ,but lets not freak out we are constantly in contact with germs and bacteria as we go about our day we breath it ,in and out...some is bad ,but some is good and truely necesary for our immune system to protect us when we spray, wipe or wash with antibacterial cleaners .we also wipe our good friends the good bacteria that lives in our bodies and whos job is to protect us from the bad ones .bottom line ,I was one of the nuts that alway carried (and I still do just for emergency )purrell or what ever gel you clean your hands ,and everytime we traveled, I would stop in a store to buy lysol spray to desinfect every corner in our hotel room ,I took all precautions because I was terrified to get sick or my children ,by october every year we all had to have our flu shoots,I tell you I still got sick and my children too ,I didn't know what I was doing wrong?
I stop using all that crap I start using simple soap and water, and common sense ,not even the flu shoot any more and for the 4th year in a role ,we been healthier than b4 when we were using all that, don't take it wrong I still careful I carry my sandles to the shower and don't like to walk around barefoot in a hotel ,you know I don't like to catch atlethes foot I walk in my socks but if you really think about it, unless you are a nut and ask everyone that comes to your house to take their shoes off ,you still walk around barefoot in your home and if you know a lot of diseases make there entrance throughout the feet well not to get paranoyed ,take precautions ,wash your hands with soap and water use common sense ,but please stop using that crap, that is your own body immunue system worse enemy for MOST COMMON DISEASES like a commun cold .

I remember one time I had a 2 day long basketball tournament so we stayed at a hotel I had hardly heard of. The only problem is that when I put on my pajamas and took my shoes off and walked to the bed the bottom of my clean white socks turned completely black. However not only in my room but in all the rooms the other girls were staying in. That was the nastiest feeling I had ever had.

One needs papers and a social security number to get a job at a hotel and fake green cards are not all that convincing.

My family and I stayed at the Hampton in Tallahasee and it was discusting. The beds had pubic hairs in them and the crumbs were everywhere. I travel all over the country and for the most part the Hotels I stay in are ok. But I am NOT sleeping with comforters,Using remotes with sanitizing, and I clean the parts of the bathroom I will be using .Shower and sink. It is the hardest part of my Job TRAVEL.

When you leave pull all the bedding off and stack neatly on the floor. That way it is just as easy for them to put on a clean set
