As a native Virginian, it must be explained that the motto is a shortened version of "Sic semper evello mortem Tyrannis"; "Thus always death comes to tyrants" and the state flag has Virtue/Virginia (personified as a toga clad female) standing atop the throat of a de-crowned king. So, in other words, we keep it real.
