So long, Northwest 747's
The end of an airline is upon us. While there are still a few wrinkles in th merger between Delta and Northwest Airlines to iron out, things are pretty much set in stone when they start repainting aircraft. To start, Delta, a carrier that has never had the 747 jumbo jet in its livery, will be usurping Northwest's aircraft and putting them on long haul routes.
You can see the whole process of repainting in the above video.
To many, this is a sad passage of redtail aircraft from the once proud Northwest Airlines into the sad mass of Delta airlines. It's nostalgic, I suppose, but I'm going miss the NW frequent flyer program more than it's 747s.

This actually makes me sad. But then again, I was also disappointed when they changed their logo in about 2002 was it? From that cool NW mix to nwa...

still concerned though, as Delta has take the approach if you don't use your miles in 1yr they'll cancel them. I have too many to use in 1 yr. Must get rid of them ASAP.

I got this from Delta's website.
--------
Accounts with no activity for 12 consecutive months after enrollment will be deleted. A new SkyMiles number can be obtained by contacting Delta.
Currently, miles will not expire as long as you participate in one of the following activities at least once every two years:
Earn miles for travel on a qualifying Delta, Delta Shuttle®, SkyTeam, or other SkyMiles airline partner flights.
Earn or redeem miles with one of the SkyMiles program partners including hotels, car rentals, Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express, international credit card partners, SkyMiles Dining & Hotels by Rewards NetworkSM, MilePoint.com, mortgage lenders, CAP magazine subscriptions, real estate, or telecommunications partners.
Buy Miles here at delta.com or by calling the number on the back of your SkyMiles card.
Redeem miles on Delta, Delta Shuttle, a SkyTeam partner, or another SkyMiles airline partner. Redemption of previous program awards does not extend the mileage expiration date.

With regard to the statement "Delta, a carrier that has never had the 747 jumbo jet in its livery", that's incorrect. From 1971-1977, Delta operated five Boeing 747-100s in their classic "widget" livery.

ugh, when is delta ever going to learn. when getting my MBA, I did a consulting project for delta. one of the many things we found that was causing financial problems for delta was the huge number of airframes in the inventory. bringing on 747's is only going to exacerbate these problems. i don't know why they didn't just sell these off to another carrier and buy more 777/767/757 to fill the gaps

I'm going to miss NW; I just flew to India last week with their partner KLM. They treated me very well, fed me three fairly tasty (by airline standards anyway), hot meals. But Delta is just another budget-cutting, soulless corporate entity. And I've never had problems with flight cancellations or baggage with NW, which I can't say about Delta.
