Yes, it's interesting to see the opposing tensions interact when dealing with a tragic past. In Russia, where I currently live, the push to fully reckon with Soviet atrocities is minuscule and has lost out to the trend to simply sweep everything under the rug.
I believe this was a huge mistake, at least in this case. With Putin in power, glorifying the Soviet Union seems to be the way to go, rather than learning from mistakes. But then again, the U.S. isn't very good at learning from our mistakes either ...
