Planeload of drunk Irish passengers creates havoc on Cuba bound flight
In what can only be described as Déjà vu, 40 Irish passengers bound for Cuba created a riot on their Thomas Cook flight. The group filled up on booze, harassing and punching fellow passengers, and one of them even went so far as to attempt opening the emergency exit mid-flight.
One terrified passenger ended up sitting with the flight attendants in the galley for 5 hours just to get away from the ruckus.
According to the (sketchy) report, the hooligans continued their drunken rioting at their resort, and even on the return flight. 17 of them were actually barred from boarding the flight back home to London Gatwick, but the article does not mention what their fate was, so for all we know, they are still stuck in Cuba.
After reading the story, and the reports from passengers on the flight, I'd say the group was lucky they were not on a US flight carrying federal air marshals. If a drunk fool started smoking and punching fellow passengers on a commercial flight in this country, I'd hate to think what would happen to them, but I'm fairly sure it would not be the weak "investigating events with a view to a possible complaint to police" reported in the source article.

No surprise here. Seems there are more and more articles about drunk
Irish passengers, or British passengers. No self control when it
comes to booze.

Just to let you know, that you seem to think that all English and irish for that matter, are all drunks. Please do some homework on drinking and driving in the States, and all other countries you care to name, and see who comes up with the highest death toll. Proud to be British.

Just to ad to my previous comment,no control over booze, but control over guns its better to be a happy drunk than a ride by gun slinger. The brit lady.

Why didn't the pilot land at the first available airport and kick them off? If the crew couldn't control the situation, then it seems it would be a danger for everyone in the cabin. I am sure that the majority of them were drunk when they got on the plane, or close to it. With such a long flight, giving them more alcohol only fueled the fire. Sounds like this was poorly handled by the crew.

Well lets see you fly from Ireland to Cuba i would assume over the Atlantic Ocean so it seems there wouldn't be a good strip of land to land on in the middle of the ocean. But that's just me, I don't know.

LOL... and on YOUR map.. where would that landing place be??? DUH.
Pat Jan 6th 2009 1:42AM
My guess for an 'emergency' landing would be anywhere on the east coast of the United States. Geography puts it in proximity to Cuba. There are 2 others options: (1) Don't leave, or, (2) Turn the plane around and return to the original destination.

For anyone that's not from the UK, the Daily Mail is a tabloid newspaper known to exaggerate, if not completely fabricate, stories. Take this sort of thing with a pinch of salt!

It's all over the news. Not just The Daily Mail. Just google the story.

When I was in Serbia a year and a half ago we went to the Exit Festival... were a large number of the people were British, Irish and Scottish... let's just say that booze + Eastern Europeans = a really fun time to watch but not be involved.
Michael Gee Jan 5th 2009 3:23PM
Ireland, England and Scotland are in Western Europe ..duh!
Kevin Burgoyne Jan 5th 2009 9:21PM
British, Irish & Scottish? So which country did the Scottish people come from (and some of the Irish)?

That's NOT what deja vu means. Deja vu is the feeling that you have experienced something before, when you actually HAVE NOT.

Thanks for making me laugh. I love the Irish, British, and Scots. They are just a riot to be around when they are having a good time. You just need riot gear on sometimes. On an American flight they would have been removed at the next available airport.
