I spent my 10-day holiday visiting Kabul in March 2006 with a humanitarian group called Global Exchange, since I was afraid to travel solo. I flew Ariana Afghan Airlines and it was okay, it got me to/from Kabul in one piece (out of Dubai). We stayed in a guest house in a Kabul neighborhood.
The Afghan people are warm, friendly, and welcoming but as the author notes, it's a war zone. But despite not having security with us, I felt safe most of the time.
I blogged about my trip here: http://www.quirkykitsch.com/
