They are indeed, I had a very expensive vase from China when I was connecting in New York. I had to keep it in my backpack because it would not fit in my luggage. I had it padded all over with socks and tissues. I asked the officer (politely) to be gentle, and he threw it on the conveyor belt. I was very offended so I said "careful! that's an expensive vase!" or something like that. And he replied with "yeah we've all got expensive shit."
