I don't remove people from images unless it is through cropping. I have inserted people - specifically myself. My hubby and I were in Bavaria and no one was around to take a photo of us, so I took a photo of him and he took one of me and when I got home I got the photo I really wanted. No one has ever noticed that in the image I appear much shorter than my hubby when in real life I am taller than he!
I liked my Nikon Coolpix, too, until it went missing one summer vacation. I still regret the loss of the photos inside.
