As a former flight nurse, I have to wonder why they were not travelling with a special medical team - a neonatalogist, an RN and a respiratory therapist. Who knows what the specialty of the doctor on board was - a dermatologist? It might not have made a difference, but having the proper equipment and trained professionals could have helped save their lives. Maybe it just wasn't in God's plan, and I hope he gives comfort to their families.

I think it may be that because they were coming from liberia, it wasn't possible to get a team of professionals together to accompany the babies on the trip. It's possible that if they had all of those people available they may not have had to come to America to perform the procedure. Just a guess.
