Delta flight diversion doesn't save conjoined twins
After writing the Winona post another flight diversion story came out. Winona's seemed trivial in comparison, although I'm always interested to sift through vagueness of words like "sick," and who gets what treatment.
The latest diversion story that I read at CBCnews.com has a sad ending. Yesterday, a Delta plane taking Liberian conjoined twins from Brussels to New York had to make an emergency landing at Halifax airport after the twins stopped breathing. The mother, sitting next to them, noticed the problem. A doctor on board provided help, but the twins died before the plane landed.
The one month-old twins were on their way to New York for treatment. Once in Halifax, the mother and twins were taken to a medical examiners office to find out what went wrong, and the other passengers who were sitting close by were interviewed. The plane continued to JFK once the mother and babies were off and the interviews were completed.
Being on an airplane with conjoined twins would be dramatic as it is. When I read the story, I imagined what it would be like to be on the plane rooting for their survival, but to no avail.
Now, several people have had a flight experience and a story to tell that most of us will never have in our lifetimes. So sad to think about that mother. [This photo from One Tree Hill Studios is of a plane landing at Halifax.]

My heart goes out to the family of these twins. There is really nothing to say except I'll be thinking of you.

I'm with Sparkles....one month year-old twins? Were they one month old or one year old? However, a very sad story.

i love when you asshats miss the big picture. 1 year, which the article doesn't say, or 1 month. does it matter? a family lost 2 loved ones. yeesh. get a hobby.

Hey,"sparkles" and "kayaknbaby65"----Not ANYWERE in the article does it make reference to any "one month year-old twins"...NOWHERE! At the risk of sounding callous (which is EXACTLY the category that YOU TWO fall into), do you (and your "ilk") merely search for things to deride, or are you merely, to some degree, "mentally challenged"?
To "coin" a phrase (without intending a 'pun'), This is the "Jet Age"...if you can't KEEP UP, TAKE NOTES!

can't you read stupid the first words in the third paragraph are the one month old twins before you get on someone elses case know what your talking about or you make yourself look stupid
Michael Smith Nov 23rd 2008 6:49AM
EXACTLY, sweetie....One MONTH old....NOT "One month "YEAR" old", like they'd BOTH SAID!!! Now, who's paying attention, and who's NOT???
Frubens Nov 23rd 2008 8:06AM
Juliea or whatever your name is, if you could please re-read the damn article you'll notice that it says "The one month-old twins..." I dont know how you were unable to read this, but no need to be obnoxious to others for your stupidity. Thanks.

As a former flight nurse, I have to wonder why they were not travelling with a special medical team - a neonatalogist, an RN and a respiratory therapist. Who knows what the specialty of the doctor on board was - a dermatologist? It might not have made a difference, but having the proper equipment and trained professionals could have helped save their lives. Maybe it just wasn't in God's plan, and I hope he gives comfort to their families.

I think it may be that because they were coming from liberia, it wasn't possible to get a team of professionals together to accompany the babies on the trip. It's possible that if they had all of those people available they may not have had to come to America to perform the procedure. Just a guess.

To:OLIVE BRANCH---I agree implicitly with your "sentiment" in regards to the unacceptable "behavior" of the "asshats" you referred to, however, without "looking too deeply", or into whatever extent "they" are liable to "defend" their actions, I would like to offer the thought that they apparently ALREADY have a "hobby",... that being the rapid removal, re-insertion, removal, re-....etc.,...of their HEADS from their EXHAUST AREAS! What they NEED is a CONSCIENCE and a HEART!
THAT being said, since they OBVIOUSLY DO NOT HAVE EITHER, they are probably going to be more able to ACTUALLY USE a complimentary spray can of WD-40, or an "Economy Sized" container of Petroleum Jelly, in order to make their repetitive "removals and insertions" more "trouble-free"!

Can some of you people NOT read??? where does it say one-month year old kids????? And one wonders why its said on the news that americans cant read, write, or speak English correctly..... I rarely ever read these "posts", now i remember why i don't..... good grief....

Thank God for natural selection !
Leslie Nov 23rd 2008 4:03AM
The story, when originally posted, contained the typo; someone obviously corrected the error.
Michael Smith Nov 23rd 2008 4:04AM
ROADRU441424---An additional item, which you failed to take note of, is the fact that in the "English Language" (of which you wax so eloquently), it is ALSO considered customary to utilize CAPITAL LETTERS when beginning sentences, spelling "Common Names", using the letter "I" when referring to oneself, and when spelling the NAME of a country (i.e. "America"!), whether used conversationally OR as "subject matter".
While I must agree "in theory" with your sentiment, I must DIS-agree with your criticizm if you are not going to submit YOURSELF to the criteria that you demand of OTHERS....! ('nuf said?)

Ooops! I neglected to mention the lack of apostrophes in contractions...silly me!
frusealclubber Nov 23rd 2008 4:49AM
You would think they'd be on some sort of medical transport instead of commercial. Surely there's got to be jets equipped with this type of equipment.
Michael Smith Nov 23rd 2008 7:13AM
JULIEA4562---Don't know if you got my "personal" reply to the one you left for ME, but just in case you didn't...and ONCE AGAIN, here...PAY ATTENTION!
The two individuals that I addressed my comment to (in the FIRST place) said, and I quote: ("sparkles"): "The one month year-old twins"
huh?
----------and---------
("kayaknbaby65"): "I'm with Sparkles....one month year-old twins? Were they one month old or one year old? However, a very sad story."
----------THEREFORE---------
While it would THRILL me to accommodate you by responding "venomously" to your calling me "stupid" (YOUR WORDS...), I will merely ask you to read it AGAINNNN, and explain to me exactly HOW it is possible for a person to be both ONE-MONTH old, and ONE-YEAR old at the SAME, FREAKIN' TIME???
I eagerly await your well-investigated, well-thought-out "response"...
